Which GPS do you own/have/use

Postby Cagie » Sat May 03, 2008 12:26 am

1st thing members,

Yes I know this subject has been mentioned/discussed many times however I am in a slight pickle.

I have a Navman ICN520. Navman in there wisdom do not issue a new map for my GPS. navman say that theywill trade my one in and pay $197 they will give me a new S30 model.

Thats great however I have looked at the new navmans and to be honest they dont really do much for me.

I like the Garmin brand as they also make real GPS units (Models to go bush walking with etc etc - unlike navman).

Thought others are saying the tom tom.

I put this series of questions out there for the members who have more tech/electrical knowledge than me.

What is a good GPS for between the $250 - $450 mark.

I like the Garmin Nuvi310 as it has a external/fold out anttena like mike icn520.

So memebers tell me the good bad and crap of each model please.

I am doing my head in and need some realnon bullshit answers please.

Thanks

Cagie

Need an option for 'other'. I have a Mio P550.

Got it cos I know the Mio distributor so I got it cheap :) Reasonable for the price, I guess. The SiRFstar III module isn't bad, can lock onto up to 16 satellites at any one time :)

I have a Pioneer AVIC-HD3 for sale if anyone's interested ;)

(I just added "Mio" and "Other" as options.)

I have a Navman S50. Paid just under $400 for it.
The S30 has a smaller screen, and less functions than all the other "Sxx" models.
I found the "select address" function much easier to use on the Navman than the others.

Would love to try some other GPS units though, to compare :)

Has anyone done a custom cubbyholder for the GPS? :D

I have the tom tom 710. It works great. Now it's fast to lock and the new mapping 2008 is great.
It originally came with the 2006 mapping and it was crap. It kept telling me to U-turn at lights, giving me really stupid paths and took ages to calculate a re-route on a wrong turn. (I got the upgrade from piratebay, TomTom should be shot for asking 200 bucks for new mapping on a dangerously flawed device).
It's a bit thick but the current model (720) is much thinner for the same price.
(I also have a Garmin Etrex GPS for outdoor stuff. I'd say the TomTom locks much quicker).

I got the TOMTOM GO720

I was the one responsible for doing a bulk order for work & personally i found the TOMTOM easier to use & had good usable features not ones you don't Need. they also have a thing called GPS quick fix, & i believe it defiantly makes a difference if you haven't done a update in a few weeks it gets slow to lock in to a satellite, but as soon as you do the update it locks in very quick.
The other interesting thing i found is when your looking for POI or voices etc on goggle i have tended to find more ready to go for the TOMTOM

My mistake on the dates, I got Australia v700.14XX (in a file Australia_v_710.zip) I thought that was 2008 so it's probably 2007. In any case it's 1000% better than the one that came on it at the beginning of last year.

I have the MIO C520, good unit, more reliable so far than the Tom Tom One I used but I have to actually check the set up and work out the finer points. It's served me well as a turn on and go unit so far though, got the editors choice on CNet.com.au.

Main reason I got it was that it was included in my lease arrangement.
