Just as long as you don't try putting a larger fuse in there BBB, worst case if the gauge draws too much power (unlikley) you'll just blow the fuse and know you need to wire it directly.

There is no fuse for the dimmer circuit. It's connect directly to the body control module. It actually works a little different. It uses a constant +12v power source with a varying negative (ground) which allows for the dimming. So when it's off both sides of the bulb actually have +12V (potential difference of 0V). So if you want to tap into it you need to run a constant +12v source and use the dome light wire as a ground :) Just don't overload it or it's an expensive fix!

With regard to the original question, is it best to use an amp's high level (speaker) input or a quality converter to send the signal in via RCA first? Or not much difference for a sub?

Speaking to the guys at Frankies Car Audio when I was doing audio shopping/research late last year, the sub/amp combo which I bought from them had speaker level inputs but they told me I'm better off using a separate quality hi to low converter...I forgot the reason why they suggested it. Don't get a cheapo converter though as they're known to produce noise/static. After discussion, I convinced them to throw in a Vibe Hi to Lo converter (RRP~$50) for free. I used the existing stock sub inputs into the high to low converter, which inputs signal into the amp via RCA leads, and I've got absolutely nothing to complain about. Crystal clear quality.

The only reason you would use a quality LOC instead of an amp's high level inputs is to minimize induced noise.

Its not much difference in regards to noise for a sub.

Speakers that output a higher frequency can show signs of noise a lot easier than a sub would.

Cool, then the way forward is to wire tap the gauge dimmer wire (its a ground) to the lighter illumination or dash illumination ground?

Its great that Narva make those taps - for wider availability.
I bought a similar thing from Selbys...

Not sure about those, any that run off the manual dimming circuit would be good. I haven't looked into the wiring of that circuit myself so can't advise. If you know your way around a wiring diagram it should be in one of the ones I have here :)

Cheers, cant have too many WSM's.
I'll be documenting my progress in a new thread as the AEM failsafe is a fairly complex install (for some lol)...

Well it worked and sounds great to me.
my KAC8105D amp has the speaker input so just used that, the sensor auto turn on didnt work, thought i had a dud amp but just used a remote wire to the centre console cig lighter and works great.
removed the old sub previous owner put a 10 inch boss in the parcel shelf! WTF and was not fixed down, and fixed my tail light (wire was damaged)
Very happy now
