Headunit Options?

Hey guys. I got a 05 2.5 manual and I want a new headunit.
Went to Maroochy Car and Sound on the sunshine coast and they quoted me $799 for the double din facia and about $800 for a alpine headunit. Great people but very $$$.
Was wondering is it cheaper to buy the facia and headunit online then get them to install it. And if so, what sights?

Yes, that fascia from AVO is a genuine Subaru part - you should realistically pay absolutely no more than about $400 brand new.

Don't forget to check the For Sale section too as one pops up every so often - I got mine for $250 secondhand.

I presume that $800 is buying you a double-din touchscreen headunit?

As above the facia kits are $400, from either AVOjdm or our forum vendor Michael from Garage 88 (sales@garage88.com.au)

I'm assuming your current headunit is a non-McIntosh? If so, the install is very easy, Literally plug and play.

Yeah the alpine was a double din touchscreen. It was just a reccomendation from their shop. Any brands/models you guys would reccomend?

My mate is 2nd year auto electrician. Would it by easy enough for him to instal?

Yeah, a 12 year old could do the install. Neatest and easiest way to go about it is to buy aerpro plugs, so there's no soldering or cutting wires. Just plug it in and put the screws in.

The hardest bit is getting the console out, but even that's really easy.

Good! Yeah I have pulled it out a few times. I'm running my sub via inputs that play through the speakers. So bad haha

That will fit fine. All you need then is a set of Pioneer to ISO and ISO to Subaru adapter leads (about $10 each) and you're ready to plug and play. ISO leads are not needed if you are happy to splice into the factory loom, however.

Hey David,

The Kenwood & JVC double DIN units are great and I have owned and installed a few myself. Also Blaupunkt couple of months ago brought out a double DIN
that even has SAT/NAV using the iGo software for a tad under $900 too ! I also owned an Eclipse AVN 4400 when I had my H6 Liberty but found that I longed for the sonic signature that my Kenwood used to produce.

Should be a walk in the park installing if you get the AV replacement panel as the others have suggested, here's my walk through from a couple of years ago when I had a Liberty 2.5 and then later the H6 ->

try sound in motion in nambour as well mate,

i had alot of my work done by them and brian an the guys there are always great an really helpful they put my facia kit in (got it off phat) and an alpine double din a few years ago an havent had any problems with it at all.
