Active/Powered Subwoofers

Postby mihai » Mon Mar 08, 2010 1:46 pm

Hey all,

Am thinking of giving my car a bit more bass, so I have been looking into subwoofers. I like having my boot space so i dont really want to go the whole amp + subwoofer in a big box thing. While searching the interwebs i came across some nice little 8" enclosed units. Amp + Sub in a small package to fit under the passenger or drivers seat. All they require is power from the battery and to connect to the speaker wires coming from the back of the HU. They incorporate a Low Pass Filter, 8"/10" sub and an amp to power the sub.

Here are some examples:

The Clarion SRV313
120W Amp
6.5" Counter drive woofer
RCA line level input/Speaker high level input
Remote control for gain control /low pass filter (selectable 50/75/100/120 Hz)/phase select
RRP $399

The Blaupunkt DBA-200a
8" Woofer
70W RMS Amp (140W Peak)
Variable low-pass filter (40-120 Hz)
Preamp- and speaker-level inputs
Discontinued but readily avaliable on fleabay international.

The above two are for underseat solutions, however i also came across this nice pioneer powered subwoofer.

The Pioneer TS-WX77a
2x 16cm Woofers
200W Max output power
RCA/speaker level inputs Wired remote controller
6m Wired remote controller

What are peoples thoughts on these powered/active subwoofers? Does anyone have one installed?

Thanks.

from that photo of the wrx, it looks like it takes the same amount of space from my subwoofer and amp, length wise it is but are you goner put anything on top of that =/, so in a sense i think you should just get a sub and amp.

dedicated sub/amp combo is definitely a better solution, but as an underseat solution there have been some pretty good results using invisabass.

A dedicated amp & box doesn't always have to be that bulky. When I had Fairfield Car & Radio do my setup, I told them I still wanted to retain as much boot space as possible. They actually did a great job with the Focul amp and Soundstream 12" sub. Sure I've lost a small corner of the boot but I can still fit most things in without worry.

Everything is neatly pushed to the back of the rear seats

Still got decent space left. Ignore the messy nets.
