sooo i painted my Ultrex grill this weekend told the guy at the paint shop the color code of the car etc 36j pearl, it all came in pressure packs, primer, white, pearl and the clear coat.

all the painting was going perfect and it was looking good but when all the coats had been done and dry i went out today to put it onto my car and turns out the guy at the car paint shop didnt give me the correct white soo it looks crap.. looks to white for the car soo now im just going to go to a panel beater etc shop and get it done by them. Damn i was soo annoyed after all that
You try and believe the guys that mix paint for there jobs to get it correct :(

Cheers Daniel

Could it be a case that the paint on the car has aged and so is not as white as the white that was mixed up for you? This is not uncommon for smash repairs often they will check the rest of the paint and adjust the mix accordingly.

yeah well i was thinking this..... but would the grill take long to age and blend into the rest of the car? thats the thing atm it sticks out like dogs balls :P so to speak, i wouldnt mind giving it time and see how it goes but it just doesnt loook that nice atm :(

Theoretically under the exact same conditions (weather/UV/pollutants exposure) the grill would take 5 years to age to the same as the rest of the car is now. But in 5 years the rest of the car would have aged another 5 years :P

For a small job like that I would expect a shop to charge $150 - $200.00 to paint the grill in matched white pearl. Most of the time is in mixing up the paint so even though it's a tiny amount of painting you are still paying a premium. Perhaps get things like mudguards etc painted at the same time to make it more worth your $?

I'm painting my grill too but I'm doing it in satin black so I'm pretty sure it should turn out OK!

hahahah exactly like mine mate. i doubt its the paint guys, because mine is exactly like that. looks too silver/white depends on the light its in.

i got quoted $150 for a shop to do it, but they would probably have the same issues.

i'm thinking of carbon fibre wrapping my grille

Usually if you take it to a smash repair with a white car more than 3 years old, they tend to take a sample of your paint and try to match up accordingly rather than go by paint code. Smash repair folks always say white is the hardest colour to match because ittends to discolour a shade or two over time. Good luck with matching the colour! Couldn't you take the grill to a tanning booth and leave it there for a few hours so the UV rays can simulate years of sun exposure? :P

well with cg there are two options.

buying a dry carbon kit, around $140-150 to do the grille, from overseas.

or buying the new 3D vinyl wrap. it looks, feels and well, looks like carbon fibre. enough to do the grille is around $30-50 incl delivery from fleabay.

not sure which way i'll go, might try this vinyl and sus it out

so went back to the crash supply shop and you wouldn't believe it they did some paint tests and found that adding the less than 1 gram of black to the white does make a big difference, even though that's what they 36J on the PC says to put in it :P

so i have now resprayed the grill looks alot closer than it did before :P got another coat of pearl to go on then put on the gloss and see how it goes. Going to let it get weather and blend in a bit more :) or just paint it black if all else fails haha
