I think u can't tint it too dark.

Maybe 40-50% is enough.

Thanks

Heritage from what generation? What state are you in? Even though the back 3 privacy tinted windows are pretty dark from the factory, the max % allowed in NSW is 38% (or 35%, I forget). Smoke tint will be a bit darker than metallic, so it's up to you on what you prefer. If you're looking for darker, the max I recommend is 20% before night time visibility becomes an issue. Most tint places will go darker than the legal limit for a cash & no invoice transaction.

The transmission issue is a farse. Current OEM "privacy glass" in our cars us 19% light transmission on the rear side glass. Yet almost all states have a 35% light transmission tint minimum. So the car passes ADR but the glass is too dark :?:

Regardless - 35% is the max level you can put on any clear glass except SA with NO tint on front windows. Any further tint on OEM privacy glass is illegal.

I find it funny Subaru uses 3 different % levels. My tint guy went nuts trying to first match all x5 panels at the back, and then try to match the front side windows as well! :P

I think on the sedans it's just two levels - 19% on the rear sides and 40% on the rear.

I understood the previous post, i'm just trying to work out how to do it. eg- a 40% film on top of my factory tint = ???%
i will use the info you have provided and ask a tint shop what they can do. i will post my results when i do it.
i also found some paperwork about a UV film that was put on the glass from dealer, so i might not be able to tint any more without removing the UV (i don't want to do that)

Bumping this up. Has anyone had issues with insurance with 18% tint on the front? I'm Considering matching to the privacy glass. The car has a very mild tint on the front already which will be replaced.

Can anyone show me what 35% looks like beside the rear privacy glass?

You'll never come close to a "colour" match unless you re-tint the rear glass as well.

You'll also not be able to get close to "darkness match" without being illegal.

So, look at the above thread and see my attempts with a tint specialist mate to get as close as possible to a match colour and darkness.

Regardless, just decide - I want "LEGAL" or I want a "match". The two aims are mutually exclusive!

EDIT - To work out a transmission percentage you with multiple tints you would have , say 20% with 35% on top, would be 20% less 35% of the available light is .35 multiplied by .2 being .07 or 7% transmission.
