I have done some searches but can't seem to find many threads about using the stuff and i just ordered it all through my work..

- Meguires scratch X
- Tech Wax 2.0
- Smooth surface clay kit
- Polishing towel

i have a black wagon btw with fair few small scratches in the paint and looking a bit dull. Any tips or advice on what to do or not to do etc would be handy as it will be the Saturday job.

Cheers

never used scratch x but as for the rest:

1. Clean the car using a 'strip cleaner' to get rid of any residual wax or polish, chamoise dry and then move car into shaded area.
2. Use the smooth surface clay kit as directed on pack, you will hear and feel the change as you use it (hope you have a lot of time on your hands).
3. Apply tech wax 2 as per directions on product, thin coat is good, you don't have to slop the stuff on (I do the entire car and then buff rather than panel by panel)
4. Use polishing towel to remove wax. Flip it and turn it often and occasionally take it away from the car and shake it out.
5. Admire your handy work and take some pics to post up here.

Not meaning to offend you or anything ultrablue...but hamish i would not reccommend using any kind of waterless wash...especially on a black car! If you want something to take off overspray etc when detailing a clean car thats just been cleaned then it shouldnt hurt (i personally use Meguires final inspection)...but even after driving it around once i wouldnt touch it with anything before washing it again.

As for scratch X, be very carefull. Its usually pretty harmless BUT!-
DONT Use a dirty/already used (even for scratch X) polishing pad. (i know its probably pretty simple to work that one out..but for the first timers).
DONT Push really hard..it will cause a worse blemish than to begin with...and the point is that it will work the scratch out over time...so be patient when trying to get scratches out, pushing harder wont do anyhting because its not an abrasive forumla....its basically just a concentrated polish (from what i can tell)
DONT Bother trying to remove scratches that you can feel. Its only one that havnt bitten into your clearcoat that it will remove.
DONT Use too little. It will cause the polishing pad to come unlubricated.

I dont mean to scare you, becasue it is VERY effective and pretty harmless...these are just tips that iv picked up from using it over a couple of years on heaps of different cars.

Hope this helps 8)

Cheers, its mainly for getting the scratches out that must have been left by the car wash brushes and dirty chamious and stuff.

ScratchX or clay bar first?

Claybar first to remove the contaminants then scratch x, then perhaps claybar again if not smooth. If you scratchx with contaminants on the paint u would be rubbing it back and forth over the paint and causing more scratches.

Finally done. End results were great!
The clay bar was definately worth doing before your next wax. would probably do it every 8 months?
The scratch X is weird stuff to work with but definitely got those thousand hair line scratches that are in the paint.
Meguires terry towels were complete waste of money.
The Supreme Shine Microfibre Cloth thing has now replaced my normal chamois.
NXt Gen Wax was better then all other wax's i used and still got 7/8 in the bottle so definitely worth the extra $$$.

Hints:
- Apply everything with those hand applicator pads, don't even consider using rags or old towels. wipe wax off with microfiber towels.
- Claybar gets so much dirt and grime off some panels and almost nothing of other so don't give up after doing couple of clean panels.
- Once you have finsihed on the car i used claybar on the wheels and worked wonders, soooo much overspray and sh!t on the claybar after that.
- Constently rotate and shake out the microfibre towels when taking Tech wax of the car.

Looks good based on what the photo shows :D

+1 re chamois. The worst type are those synthetic type ones (yellowish/tan colour in a clear tube) which are almost as bad as leather ones. They scratch up paint to no end. I only use microfibre clothes with a thick, waffle pattern which collects any debris which may still be on the car instead of rubbing it around.

Looks great... awesome reflection capture of the sunset too!

Living with some scratches myself....(still got the scratches) but I ended up using a whole lot of Duragloss products and very happy with it. Claying my car was awesome... extremely time consuming but it got off so much crap that i never thought existed.... glad I will only do that twice a year!

Agree with using microfibre mitts and waffle towels. Posted my washing dilemma in the general forum as well.

www.carcareproducts.com.au was a great help (Free Plug again). went to visit them and they checked out the car and they recommended stuff to me. also on the website it shows a good page on "how to" which really really helped me especially since I have been a sponge one bucket sort of car washer in the past!

Just used Meguires PlasticX on the 2002 Bug eye Headlights and came up glass like. Recommended.

Meguires Mop Bonnet to wash your car is good and soft on your paint but losses to way many brissles! Would buy lambswool mitt next time

Same, though dont frequent OzLib much any more. I still have my Gen2 Legacy GT as a weekender for the fun stuff. :D
