LEDs Gone Wild!

Postby Arith » Wed Jul 08, 2009 1:46 am

Modifications of a rice nature. Sure, I'll admit I dabble in these .... ok ok. I am quite liberal in applying these to my vehicle.

What can I say? I likey my rice. :pardon:

Well, I think I've become addicted to LEDs! Thus far I've replaced the following areas with some sort of LED:

  • Parkers
  • Foglights
  • Brake lights
  • Signal lights
  • Dome lights
  • Reverse lights
  • Vanity mirror lights

Mind you I'm no LED King like Leo who has done more extensive work, but I think I've done more than the average person. On top of which, with the debut of the LED strips, finding new and creative ways to use them have become a challange! They are self-adhesive, flexible, and convenient. In any case, I welcome any other creative ways to use them.

Ok, putting the flame suit on and on the alert for the rice police. But this is what I've come up with so far (footwells are next!):

Boot

Many of you are familiar with my group buy for the boot strips, which probably kicked it all off.
Image

The hard part was finding a place to fit an entire 90cm strip
Image

Foglights

I wasn't a fan of where the placements of the OEM fogs were, so I got a set that were 6 horizontal LEDs
Image

Rego

Trying to light up a black rego plate on a black car was difficult. I wasn't entirely happy with simple LED bulbs
Image

So I opted for a LED strip instead!
Image

Hood

Got this idea from the Phatman! Just need to tidy up my work
Image

This is good for showcasing or simply used for auxiliary lighting when working under the hood
Image

Door

Got this idea from the Trieu! Used a festoon adaptor to run the wiring from the original location
Image

I tried positioning the strip under the door, but found lighting was adequate
Image

Once I placed the strip in the area where the pocket was (yes, drilling was involved), lighting was quite good

WOW, that is very impressive Jim. Anyway, whats so ricey about practical, functional illumination? It's when you start putting these on that I start to chime up a bit..

Look good. The rear plate lights are a little much IMO but it's not my car. The rest all look like good implementations

LOL! I think so too. Might cover up every other LED to tone it down.

Looks Jim - as long as you don't do a "Knight Rider" to the front end...

The door LEDs are connected to the factory door light sockets with the help of a festoon adapter. So yes, like the original door lights, they come on automatically when you open the door and turn off when the door is closed.

Hey Jim,

Did you do all 4 signal's? If so did you also replace the flasher unit or use load resistors?

Also do you remember what the type of globes for the signals + brake are?

Thanks

Gordon

Those door lights are a bloody good Idea, I think I may have to look at the install to see if a white man can do....
Of course I will need approval from the Rice police, strangely silent on this thread

The LED bulbs I used have built in resistors so there's no 'fast flash' or 'brake light warning'.

I think the signals are 7440, while the brake lights are 7443.

& what's wrong with Kitt? :P

I reckon some scrolling red LED's in the bonnet scoop could look the goods :D Especially on a hot black car like our Jim Boy's :D
