Rolling guards.

Postby cruisn » Thu Mar 01, 2012 7:53 pm

Sooooo....

I have to roll the rear guards on the Outback. Scrubs when fully loaded by about 3mm.

After ringing around its seems $100+ is the going rate for 2 guards..... Shit, I can buy the guard roller for that price.

Ive watched them do it on a previous car and if those tyre fitter rock apes can do it, I dont see why I cant when Im 100% more particular. Im going to buy one and do it myself.

Anyone else need their guards rolled??

The outback has the plastic panels just out from the steel guard material. Hope that doesnt affect it.

Remember to remove the rubber lining strip, and have a heatgun and take your time. Maybe even a cheap IR heat sensor to check you dont go too hot would be gun.

Am keeping a close eye on this one... Drops (Karl) I like to call him our own SA baby Phat man, has just purchased a guard roller to do mine with. Hoping rolled guards is all I need to fit 245/40/18.

What are you running on the outback Mark?

Gen2.

No rubber strip or plastic panels. :D

Only running 215's on 7.5" +48's Taylor. Gen2's dont have massive rear room like Gen4's.

Cheers mark. Gen 2 will look nice with my bigger thred. Guessing 17x7?

Think I'll be alright running 245/40/18 with only rolling the guards?

17 x 7.5 +48.

With a 8.5" +44 rim with a 245 tyre your looking at about 40mm more extension toward the guards from your current CS9's (if running 225's).

Guard rolling "may" just be enough but you will possibly require a rear camber kit also.

Awesome. Cheers Mark. Was considering the whiteline camper bolts. They be enough? I think they add 1 degree.

Not a hard task, just go slow and take your time. only adjust it a small amount each time, and yes keep it warm to avoid cracking paint.

I am buying some 18's x 8.0 and putting 225/40 on them, so at stock height I should be right but If I lower the car then I will let you know :)

Thought about this a while back with the RS as the guard rollers aren't overly pricey. Ended up using a pole wrapped in layers of tape, a heat gun, some car stands and a jack. Jack said control arm up, insert pole (lol), roll pole on tyre, adjust angle to suit. Actually worked pretty well once i got the heat right.

Or drop some coin on a roller and take some of my money when i want the GTB done :)

Do yourself a favour and buy "good" one.

I got a cheap one, which its known the threads chew out on them pretty quick. I paid $140 for mine.

The good ones that are next to bulletproof will set you back $600.
