Smoked tail lights

Postby LiamVJ » Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:55 pm

Hey guys put this up on the fb page but for those not on it . . .

Smoked my tail lights the other day using cheapo ebay film. $30 for 2 sheets of 80cmx40cm which is enough for two "tries" before you get it right

Personally I'm extremely happy with the result, no bubbles whatsoever

The result . . .

Cheers guys

Your welcome Liam. Was hoping for a "thankyou Taylor for sourcing and install for me" :(,

Jarred, it's $30 delivered off eBay. I'll put the link up tonight when I finish work.

Took two goes to get it right but I guess that's why they give you enough for 2-3 attempts lol.
There is a good how to video on the eBay page.

Liam... Can you take a pic tonight when it's dark please. Just so people can see how good this tint is at letting light through at night. I was amazed how well the tail and brakes lights came through.

Thanks for posting the link Taylor. I am interested in tinting/smoking the tail lights on my car.

Gotta say though, the instructions on the ebay link were less than clear. Particularly their references to the following:

"Dry method
Tools: ...Pap smear, credit card
2, ...mortgage from one side and cloth press against the car on the side of the table..."

Serious questions though:
Do you just cut a large piece to fit your lights?
And, does that piece go on the inside or outside of the light?
I got this plan. It's called 'Save Ass'. And the way it works is this - I slip outta one of these windows and I run like a bastard!

I cut the 2 80x40cm sheets into 4 40x40cm sheets.
Get two attempts at each tail light.

I sprayed heaps of water on both the outside of the tail light and the sticky side of the tint film.
Then while applying the film over the tail light, I used a credit card to push any air bubbles out.

A hair dryer/hear gun is also handy to heat the film making it more flexible and easier to apply.

Thanks Taylor. Can you trim after applying or have to cut it exactly to fit beforehand?

We tried both and we found that it made a HUUUGE difference to not cut it out before you apply.
Also because the taillights curve weirdly at the top cutting notches into the excess film helps to bend it around the curved surfaces.
I hope this made sense

Having seen this in person on the weekend, it looks good, particularly with the colour of Liam's car.

Well, each to their own I guess, I think it certainly looks better on that colour than it would on black. There's another photo here: http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=15165&start=90#p213383 although not particularly detailed or close :P

Bear in mind, I think there are insurance implications to doing this (i.e. you may void your insurance)

That preface blue is very different color hey. It's a very flat color. The lib will look great once you get that black on blue contrast going Liam :).
