Wheel Stud Broke

:angry2:
So today i was driving home and heard a few "rattles".....I got home and found 4 wheel nuts finger tight, and 1 super tight....I proceeded to undo the tight nut and found the stud had snapped off into the nut...minus one or two threads(these two threads left on the stud were the only thing keeping the wheel from coming extremely loose......oh did I mention I only had a wheel alignment very recently.....(under 250km ago)

so very angry....but also here to ask does the whole hub have to be replaced, or are studs separate from the hub and individual?

Cheers
Jay

You can get replacement studs although with the broken one you may end up having to install a helicoil or something. It's not a huge job just go to a regular mechanic or even tyre shops could probably do it.

Looks like someone just hit your studs with a rattle gun and only did 1 on the other rim and walked off, Very stupid thing as it can cause a shitload of damage to the car and others if that wheel came off. You can just get replacement studs but make sure they are the correct size stud or you might end up getting a large stud needing a bigger wheel nut.

very easy fix

remove the brake caliper than the rotor and then you'll see the hub which holds all your studs

punch out the broken one from the outside (not with your fist) a large punch and hammer

slip in the new stud from behind

find a wheel nut with a open top and tighten slowly untill the stud pulls through the hub and looking like all hes other 4 friends

the stud has bite slots at the end (for lack of a better word) which will lock it in place

all done

put the brake and wheel back on and dont take it to that same shop ever again

as for a new stud ....if you dont know your stud size or thread pitch go with the safe bet , get your vin no: and head down to your local subaru where they should have them in stock (wont cost that much $6-10 Max)

but dont stress your wheel wont fall of with only 4 nut

Same thing happened to me today. I took a wheel off to install some eccentric camber bolts and i must of threaded a bolt last time i put them back on in a rush. Tynans Subaru new wheel nut and stud for $17. Im gonna try and change it tomorrow.

Im spewing I couldnt even install my camber bolts though. They are soo tight that i cant get them loose, need to find a bigger breaker bar
