Mad Max returns

October 24, 2009 - 11:24AM

It's been 24 years since the release of the last movie - but Mad Max is back.

Aussie star Mel Gibson is in the running to reprise his leading role in the fourth instalment of the hugely successful franchise, which will be called Fury Road and is due to begin filming in Sydney in August next year.

But director George Miller, who was at the helm for the previous Mad Max movies, stressed Gibson had not yet been cast and that new faces were likely to feature.

"I'm still in the middle of casting, despite all the stuff we see on the net and so on. I don't even know who the final cast will be," Miller told reporters at a press conference in Sydney on Saturday.

The story for Fury Road is already fully formed and Miller says it will modernise the franchise and take it in a new direction.

The film will be shot in Broken Hill, in outback NSW, and in Sydney

Finally! This has been coming for years. The original plans were shelved because of the first Iraq war...

Check out http://madmaxmovies.com/ for some of the history. :)

I'm a bit behind updating my trip photos. We were out at Silverton on Friday, and here's a pic of me standing by a replica Mad Max Interceptor parked outside the Silverton pub.

the original is in the "Cars of the Stars" museum in the UK. It looks like they've built a new one for the new film. Not sure how that wrks, as the interceptor is written off in Mad Max 2.
(They built a second car to destroy in that film, the car from the first film was kept intact.)

Well, filming for Mad Max 4 was canned last year after all the rain turned the desert around Broken Hill into green fields covered in flowers.
They've decided to go ahead and film it in Africa this year instead.....

Personally, I wish they'd make "Mad Max 1½". i.e. What happened between "Mad Max" and "Mad Max 2".
Matt Day would make a good young Mel Gibson. :)

Absolutely.
That would be a lot more interesting as there was a fair amount of societal degradation between those two pictures. Plus 'Beyond Thunderdome' really sucked.
Props to you also for making it out to Silverton. :good:

The plot thickens.
If "Fury Road" is successful, Miller is planning another two sequels after that...
