3.0RB - Auto - Oil issues ?

Hi,
I am in the process of getting a 3.0RB Spec B Auto Sedan but I am just wondering if there are any (oil) issues when it comes to the 3liter engine ?
I have notice some threads about the oil issues for these engines but it seems that the manual gearbox car's get affected more than the auto's.
If anybody can guide me in the right direction when it comes to looking after my new H6 engine that will be most appreciated.
I would have thought that Subaru would have spent the money to fix these issues which seem to be ongoing issues for there H6 Engine.

The official word from my Subaru service department is "drive it hard straight away".
I've read that it is the first 50km which are crucial, and you need to give it plenty of wid eopen throttle then back off before the revs get to high, just to bed the rings in right.
I'm about to find out, mine is going in for its new engine this coming friday!

I have a 3.0RB Spec B Auto Sedan 4 months old with 12000k and it has used 3liters of oil since new so i'm not happy .And dealing with the idiots at Subaru realy pisses me off they use the standard text book line of "
We have had a couple of new cars that require a little oil while bedding in but we dont know of any other problems "" These idiots must think that im as stupid as them.
The only satisfaction that I have is that it is under warranty and I will have sold it before the warranty period runs out.
I think the oil issue will effect the resale $$$ when the word spreads but in the mean time I still love her

Do what I did. After the first topup, I just took it back to my dealer for every oil topup after that, so they have the complete oil usage on file.
If you're using more than one litre per 2,000km, then they'll do something about it.

Had the Lib's 12000k service yesterday and I am so relived that my concern that 3 liters of oil in 12000 is within Subaru specs and they gave me another liter for good luck
It was interesting to see a couple of 3L. short motors ready for fitting
Something else that was interesting their is a whisper of a new motor in the wind to replace the current oil burner
Gee i'm so happy to own my last Subaru

BUDDAH it doesnt have to be ur last Subby! Just leave the 3litre for sum forced induction fun!

my one used up almost 2L of engine oil when the car was 1 week old, the average fuel consumption was around 20L/100. It was crazy, took it back to the dealer, they checked it and told us to call them back in about 2 weeks if the engine still drink engine oil and petrol like there is no tomorrow. After 2 weeks the engine settle down to using 1L of engine oil per fortnight. After about a month the engine use about 0.5L of oil per fortnight. Now after a year the engine is fine, although fuel consumption is around the 16.0L/100km mark.

What sort of distance do you cover in a week monster?
Litres per thousand k's rather than per fortnight, is a bit more relevant

If find this issue of the 3.0R motor using excessive oil really interesting.
We have a MY 06 3.0RB Auto which is my wife's daily drive and it never uses any oil between oil changes.
The car has about 24,000 km now and is overdue for it's next service. I checked the oil yesterday (as I drove it and realised it was overdue for a service), and it was only just below the full mark on the dip stick.
While my wife isn't a rev head by any means, she is still a bit of a lead foot and doesn't baby the car.
Please don't think I'm implying that it must be something wrong with your driving style, cause that's not what I'm getting at. I wasn't aware of the oil issue when we bought the car (new) and we didn't do anything special to run it in, but since looking at these threads on this site and others I have become very aware of other peoples troubles with this issue.
One thing we were told was to make sure we didn't miss oil changes, as the boxer design isn't very tolerant of dirty engine oil.

My impression has been that the oil consumption is caused by oil getting sucked around the rings under high vacuum, i.e. high revs with the throttle closed, which tends to happen more in a manual (particularly under "engine braking").
The pistons and rings have been redesigned to eliminate this problem.
My original engine was the older design, my replacement is the newer design.
16 L/100km might be normal if you are always driving in stop/start traffic. You need to do a country run to see if your consumption is really excessive.

jee i know consumption is a bit higher in the 3.0R but.. 20L/100km????
I get 11-13L/100km in stop start traffic in sydney.

And that's with a bit of a heavy foot

I agree with the above, this turbo motor is very economical. I seem to always end up getting 11.2 L/100km around town.
Looking forward to a country trip.

Well time for a update 20 000 service due stopped using oil after 12000k and lead foot Buddah can average 11/12L per 100k and much the same with 900kg boat chasing me up the coast every week end.
Buddah
