it came standard on the gt sti....its great, was heaps slicker than the stock gt i test drove....

can you just take the gear knob off, cut a few inches off your stick, then tap a new thread onto the shorter stick?

as stupid as that sounds, i guess it is a somwhat legit question...

whats the diff??

i think it will have something to do with the pivot point....your solution would make the throw longer....

Yup, cutting it off won't work..

Tecnically, you will shorten the throw somewhat by cutting the stick but now since the gear knob sits lower than before, your arm will have to compensate.

Like David and gead said, it has to do with moving the pivot point up(in case of the GT) but its not as simple as just moving the pivot point only.... With the GT you also have to change the link cos with the higher pivot point the std link will hit the body for 1st and third gears.

With the older wrx's and libertys you could just get something like this:


That just fits onto the std gear stick, you hook up the link to that and can move this part up or down to get your own "custom" adjusted throw.

Also, a short shifter increases the load on the shifts and while you will be able to change gears quickly, you should do it smooth and controlled or you risk damaging your gear selector fork and even gears over time.

I've had the Subi short shift on my MY05 GT for about 18 months. Bought it from my Subi dealer and had them install it. It makes a huge difference to the 'box. Shifts are much shorter and notchier (is that even a word) allowing much quicker and more precise changes. It is a mod I'd definitely recommend.

Yes, I know the link is for a WRX, but according to Steve Coates of AVO: "Yes the MY01-On WRX short shift will also work in the MY05 Lib GT, that is assuming it is a 5 speed."

Was beaten by about half a car length by an XR6 turbo at the traffic lights the other day (I bogged down off the lights though). Next time he won't be so lucky.. haha!

I wouldn't buy that particular short shift as its only the stick and you may need to moddify the gear sourround a bit to make it work properly and you also might end up with the gear stick vibrating.

i can't tell for sure what the differences are as i've not compared the two side by side but the older STi short shifters where quite similar the AVO unit (but better made) and there's got to be a reason why STI now supplies it as a complete asembly.

Yeah Short shift is good. less movement when u play with ur knob.

And as MO said, the Sti is the whole assembly, not like bits and peices, plus its resonably priced.
