Mystery 3rd Engine Mount

Postby infraVirt » Mon Mar 07, 2022 6:44 pm

Hey folks .. my first post here .. and many thanks to all the information in this forum as it has been a wealth of useful information in my quest as a fellow Liberty GT enthusiast tinkering with the beast. That said I am yet to find anything detailing what I see under my bonnet in the form of what looks like a third engine mount beside the turbo. Looks to me to be some sort of torque related mount to help with stopping the engine from twisting itself off the other very well documented mounts. Anyone know what I am talking about and what it is called? Vehicle is a 2005 Liberty GT Wagon EJ20Y I think is the engine, think is was what they called a "plus pack" or something based on what the guy I bought it from said. Thank you in advance for any assistance. :)

Hi.. Welcome aboard. My knowledge is not as great as others here but my "guess" would be, if you have an auto, it may be the unused clutch mount perhaps... I have an 07 gt and it's auto and I remember seeing some redundant things under there and when I asked the workshop they said it is to do with manual/clutch..

Thanks Stifull .. guess I should have made mention of the trans .. its 5MT so definitely a clutch slave and master cylinder in the mix but that hardware sitting on the firewall/bulkhead and atop the bell-housing. I might have to post a pic or two but basically it is down next to the turbo bolted to the chassis, has rubber mounts where bolt holes go into chassis much like an engine mount, with a large L shaped bracket (I'm guessing about 100mm on the long sides) with slotted holes which is bolted to the top of aforementioned chassis mount and to the engine block. I have looked for pics and descriptions everywhere but nada thus far :(

Here’s the parts diagram of the gen4 engine mounts, can you identify the one you’re referring to?

Thanks BigBadBenny .. still not what I am seeing .. all those mounts are underneath the engine .. this one is off to the side next to the turbo .. I am going to try and figure out how to add pics here .. seems I need to drop them somewhere and provide a URL which is a bit of a PITA but will see what I can do.

Next time you have the car up on a hoist or stands, take a clear pic from the underside.

I get the impression it could be a warmer of some sort, being close to the turbo hot side.

Can you see pipes running to an from it?

Eg an aos/cc or a power steering warmer/cold climate accessory?

It would have been great to be a fly on the wall during that chat between Peter Brock and Holden:

"Peter, mate, you know we're a fan of your work and we know how important it is to keep the missus happy by going along with her stuff sometimes, BUT..."

I thought the energy polarising thingy was mounted on the firewall somewhere, vaguely remember seeing some pics as a kid and thinking Brocky WTF!!

Anyway, I thought this was going to be a quick post and I would be swamped with explanations but seems to be as mysterious as said Brock (may he rest in peace) magic foo thing.

Posted same on legacygt.com and so far not a single response.

I will get some more pics to assist with understanding where it is and what it is attached to and by what means.

I can assure you there are no hoses or anything like that relating to what you see (other than the power steering line going over the top of it) so as much as I like the idea of heat transfer (given its directly next to the turbo) I'm pretty confident its not that.

Has to be someone out there who has the same thing under their bonnet.
