Tyre choice for 18 x 7 GTB

Postby GTB25T » Thu Jul 08, 2021 6:19 pm

The stock potenza's are 215 45 18 on the Liberty and was thinking of 225 45 18 for replacement.
What is the general thought on that as 7 inch rim is better with a 225 tyre?

It could correct the speedo as usually under stated.

What tyre choice are people using other than Potenza?

Yoki Blue Earth AE51GT a good choice?

Personally I would be happy to run 225s on 7" rims. My wifes rex has 225s on he 7 inch rims and always has. Our 4wd has 265 on 7" rims and even when they are down to 20lb in sand, we have never had a problem. Wheel width is measured from inside of one side of the rim to the inside of the other side of the rim so bead to bead. 225 is only 9" so I can't see a problem with the fitting.

I tried a 225/45-18 AD08R on a 18x7 rim and the tyre was too wide. They are perfect on the 18x7.5 rims I now have.

I wouldn't recommend anything wider than a 215 on a 7 inch rim.

Blue earth is a quiet touring tyre.
Keen to try a set, indeed!

I’m currently on re003, rather loud on sections of the Calder :P

Ps4 is regarded as the all round daily performance tyre, ad08r best dry grip tyre.

These only work (very well) when up to temp. Normal city driving I find them slightly worse for dry grip than the RE003, much worse in the wet.

Indeed that’s the hype on FB.
Hairsplitting and BS takes on a new dimension in that arena :P

I’ve had my re003 for a year now, guess what?
They do everything much like any other tyre I’ve used…

I will have a dilemma the next time I buy tyres. It is such a close thing, the performance of the RE003s and the PS4s, i think it will come down to price. My son has had both on the sti but put new RE003s on before he went down to Thredbo this season but only because they seem a little better than the PS4s in snow.. My wifes rex has PS4s and so does daughters Impreza. I think it's price or a coin flip next time my Rex or the lib need tyres...Good luck deciding..

Bang for buck I'd rate the RE003's.

Before the EFY sales finished they were 4 for the price of 3 plus some dealers were also giving $100 cash back. These deals do come around from time to time and tyre shops are happy to take your money and let you come back weeks or months later to get the tyres fitted which is what I have done in the past when getting close to needing tyres. I buy them when they are at their cheapest and then go back with the receipt stating customer to come back when needing the tyres fitted, and get them done...They either hold on to the tyres and store them standing in racks or you can take them home if you have room to store them. I never pay full retail..for anything. :D Having 6 children makes you very careful what you spend your money on.. My last set of Michelins were $570 fitted (215/45/17) for my WRX and the 225/45/17 PS4s on my Wife's WRX were around $710 ...

I do a set each year and go on there sales to replace them with a good type when on special. Currently have Dunlop SP Sport Max TT for the first time and have got to say they are one of the best I have had. Really confident grip for the first 20,000km…..

Can't kill them. Such good wear characteristics. I feel like they've gotten a bit old in the corona times. About 40,000klms and still almost half left.

They look too thin/low profile (ie. looking wrong if parked up on a slight gutter like they are low on pressure) but I use them for road driving (not track days) and khanacross down to 18-20 psi, even 16 psi and they've never let me down. I've rolled plenty of other tyres off the rim way easier.

I'm currently looking for cheap/beat-up, light rims to replace them (incl swap of 5x good condition stock rims with a fair bit of gutter rash) to reduce reciprocating mass but I haven't been looking too hard as yet. My fav look are these from a car I used to have

Almost looking to spend money on this thing as it's cost me almost nothing to maintain for 3-4 years.

I'm looking at the Yokahama tyres
1. Advan Fleva 701

2. AE51GT Blue Earth - Well priced and have them on my wife's Impreza S as 17's. Great grip, quiet, smooth ride. went 215 on 17 x7.

Would like to go 225 45 18 on the GTB.
