3.0R-B DOA

Hi all. First post so don't be too hard on me.

So the other day I purchased a 2006 3.0R-B Manual Sedan with about 230K on it. It's a pretty tidy vehicle overall with straight panels and interior looking good for its age, lots of rego left and runs pretty well. Unfortunately I subsequently found out that some evil douchewagon has put chemweld through it at some stage to fix a blown head gasket, which has essentially turned an expensive repair into a junk engine waiting to die.

Yes, I'm an idiot for not getting it properly inspected etc etc.

Luckily I didn't pay ridiculous money for it and I expected a few issues to deal with, however getting into it for another >$10K less than a week after buying it is not what I had in mind. I don't really have the space or patience to part it out and at the moment it's 100% driveable and registered, so I'm a bit reluctant to start pulling pieces off it without a game plan.

Looking for ideas/advice. What's the best way for me to get as much of what I paid back as possible without being an a**hole?

Cheers.

Keep maintaining it till you find a wrecker or partout engine.

Start with learning to thoroughly bleed the cooling system :)

Just thinking out loud, a 2nd hand engine not an option if the remainder of the car is in good condition?
You could then part out the good parts of the screwed engine.

Thanks guys. That cooling system info is gold.

I had a brief look at second hand engines but thinking I might just look for another complete car in better mechanical shape. Seems like this won't cost too much more than a decent second hand engine anyway.

As for this one, the Chemweld is (and has been for some time) blocking up the cooling and oil systems causing additional damage to the timing chain etc so it's not going to be very rewarding exercise for me to strip it. Thinking I might just try to move it on as a complete, registered car for someone with more patience than me to drive home and dismantle at their leisure.

If that fails the local wreckers will give me almost enough cash to buy a new pair of cheap shoes so I can walk everywhere instead...

Apart from the cooling system the timing chain tensions are a known issue.
PBMS sell upgrade items, its a chance to reseal the timing covers too.

If you were to buy another car, what’s the check/evidence of the chemiweld?
