MY06 GT Liberty - Tuned by STi edition

Hi All,

an oppurtunity has presented itself to buy a MY06 GT Libby - Tuned by STi edition from a friend of the family, we had been previously considering purchasing a regular GT prem-pack but the price for the STi ed is almost too good to be true.

but... like all things, we have some minor questions too a few things...

first off there are some difference in price, about 8k difference give or take.... is that price difference really justified in the long run?? I mean spending 8k on a GT Liberty will get results above and beyond an STi edition anyway right?

basically, I'm looking for someone to sell me on the idea of buying the STi over a GT and then modifying it.

any takers on that challenge?

P.S. I want nitty gritty reasons, not just it's an STi or it's a limited edition etc... we already have an STi Impreza in our garage... so it's really going to be more about power, handling, economy.

8k upgrade on a libby GT would get a pretty spiffy machine I'd imagine???

Any advice appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Matt

A similar question was raised recently. Not exactly the same but I think some of the comments might apply for you

Try to get a MY07+ STi model because that includes Brembo's and a sunroof which is great value these days.

that's the thing, the Impreza STi is chalk and cheese above the regular wrx...

that particular edition (and no offense to anyone who has one) is just a uppidy GT that has some STi goodies, but from all accounts is slower, but handles a bit better...

if it had the brembos and the 6-speed box and a more powerful engine... yeah... I'd be telling myself it's a no brainer...

but 10kw and a few grands worth of off the shelf components an STi doth not make.

call me a hater, or whatever, I'm not trying to start fights, I really need to hear a convincing argument to go one way or the other, cause I'm thinking the $8000 difference between the two cars, invested in a GT could make for an interesting ride.

anyways... I am a procrastinator... I will be around long enough for many of you to find out, but as such I don't make my decisions lightly... I bought my STi, the MY05 STi for particular reasons over even the MY04 STi... but that's not the point...

still looking for that convincing argument

Kind Regards,

Matt

Matt, there is no convincing argument. Each person picks one or the other due to personal preference, budget, etc.

It seems like you have the argument well in hand and suggestions from other people aren't cutting it. So just draw up a list and figure out what you want from the car.

You just said the STi tid bits that come with the Tuned By STi edition aren't worth the $8k difference nor is the small 10kw gain. So there you go, you seem to have answered yourself again.

I think the above answers the below pretty well.

But, in the 2nd hand market today, the price difference between the tuned by sti and normal Gt would be pretty small me'thinks?

That's why it's a 'Liberty tuned by STi' rather than a 'Liberty STi' :)

Hell yes it would! If you're planning on mods and will be replacing the bits that are upgraded as part of the STi package, you might as well go for the cheaper base.

Personally I like the look of the STi kit (understated but a nice package), the Brembos are great and by themselves would probably be a $3-5k option, the wheels save me spending another $2-3k, the short-throw stick is handy but not so short that my missus has trouble driving it, the stock exhaust has a little bit more of a burble to it (and I like the quads), and being a limited edition can't hurt resale too much, and it feels nice to have something a little bit special. If none of that matters to you or you're likely to change most/all of it, get the 'base' GT!

Heh-heh, that would have been the case before the dollar dropped. Now the Brembo's are near $10k if you were to add them after and the wheels close to $5k.

hey guys, I very much valued your input...

I have to apologise for being cryptic and causing any ill feelings, I had to be a bit vague just in case any one from the sellers camp was on this forum.

We have decided to buy the Liberty GT tuned by STi... this is it here:

Image

it's a nice looking ride, we ended up getting it for 30k drive away...

picking it up on saturday... keep in mind for those looking, it's currently advertised on carsales for 34k + on roads... and it was only a few weeks ago in the high 38's.... so I think it's a steal, probably could have pushed a bit harder and got him down to high 28-29's... but alas... don't look a gift horse in the mouth...

a GT prem pack would have been around 27k on road... so this libby with the STi goodies is definitely worth the extra 3k.... if not for those sexy wheels alone hey...

alas... in all the fun and games.... I have to remember, this will be the wifes car... so I'll be the one in the passenger seat.... hehe

it'll join my bluey in the garage...:

hope to meet any qld members out for a cruise now we're part of the liberty owners guild ;)

cheers,

Silver MY05 is my mates, his brother and his cousin both have silver bug eye STi's and my other mate has a blue MY05 STi just like mine... so the Libby will sit in the family tree nicely as the younger cousin ;)
