2011 GT Transmission options or Engine swap (pls help)

Postby Gen5Miles » Fri Aug 07, 2020 3:28 pm

Okay so consider first that im not the most knowledgable person ever bout subarus when it comes to the nitty gritty, but i know a reasonable amount.

I would like to know some peoples opinions on my options for my car

Sti wheels and strut brace

- in the past has had the head gaskets done, and also the cam cover and all the front engine seals, other than that its stock.
- The current state of the car is that it needs a new transmission (5EAT auto) and that is being quoted at cosing about 4100 with freight and an install, i paid about 10k for the car, and i was just going to sell it for a manual gen 4 gt. The thing is i just really do not want to lose 5 grand, as i was just going to buy an older lib in the manual (as the genV gt is illegal to drive on your P plates in NSW) so heres the thing

- Could i swap my ej255det into a manual gen 4 liberty

-thoughts on manual swapping the car, and moreover, how much would that cost and what would it entail

ive loved subarus since i got into cars and I REALLY want to mod a subaru, i just love the things, i was in a wrx sti earlier this week, and now im just fiending, but i dont have a car that works right now, and i dont want that to be a reoccuring issue.

in you guys much more educated opinions what is my best option, i could consider getting an exemption for the manual swap? would the engine swap be legal on Ps. Anyway hope someone can at least give me some pointers, also if anyone wants to take it off my hands without trans im located in newy and ill take offers

Trans specialist pulled apart the trans and said the valve train is cooked, and theres fragments of metal in it and stuff, am i being bullshitted? to be fair i dont personally think hes lying, i initially just got the trans serviced when the problem arose, (slamming into gear and that, AWD light, AT oil temp, only sitting in sport mode on the Si, Check engine light) and it was still occasionally revving to redline and slamming itself into gear (or at least trying to) It worked when i drive it in the manual shift mode with the paddles tho.

Just double checked for you, the only Gen V GTs that P Platers aren't allowed to drive are the sedans with the 6 Speed Manual from 2009-2011

If I were you, I would just fix it to get it working, keep it for a few years until you're off P's, then buy something else if you so desire. Just don't mod the gen5 along the way, it would be a waste of money if you don't plan on keeping the car.

Youre definetly right, but sadly i rarely ever do the sensible thing when it comes to things im passionate about, im going to get this thing working in one way or another and then ill sell it and by a gen 4 GTB manual. then spend all my money on that! sounds like a very silly, but very fun plan :). i just want so badly to have a car i can mod and drive and id keep the gtb for a fair while, i love the 4gen looks. And plus nothing really is as fun as driving, so i feel i may as well do it if i like it so much. Plus me and my friends after we finish school (in a few months) plan to all build our cars a fair bit. My mates building the engine in his 93 mx5 and ill probs mod the lib while he does that

Have you hunted wreckers for a GenV GT auto box?
Its usually a cheaper option - get it checked, fresh fluid and bolt her up - but you need to find one, and they aren't that common.
Have you asked JDM importers? Import Monster have a BM/BR auto trans shown in their Yahoo Auctions - talk to them.

As others say, keep it a while longer if you can 'til you can choose something else - better way to save money.
