Hey guys...
So I'm after a small to mid-sized turbo charged car. Although I have test driven neither... I'm narrowing down to a 2007 Subaru 2.5L gt and an 07-08 Golf GTI.

I want something quicker than my current car which is a 02 V6 camry Sportivo 5spd manual. I love the look of the liberty Gt but I'm concerned that as stock, wouldn't be quicker than my camry based on performance reviews. Ive owned a ve commodore and a couple Falcons my last which was an FG and this camry goes neck to neck to with it. It's quite quick surprisingly for what it is. Some sources say the gt gets to 100 in roughly 6.5secs but others say 7.3 (which would make it a fraction quicker than my current.

Does anyone drive the GT and can tell me whether they are worth the buck? Do they see a solid increases of power when tuned?

I have considered an aurion also but they dont have a manual variant. Liberty and Golf are also much nicer to look at.

10 year old turbocharged car? Depends what you've wrenched on before.
I'd go Japanese, but I've never worked on a VW. I wouldn't trust "German engineering" sensors and crap, but then the EJs aren't renowned for long lasting head gaskets.

Nothing too major. I'd like to see an acceleration time of around 5.5-6 secs to 100. No I won't be doing any mechanical work myself other than regular oil changes/brakes

Budget would be 8-10k for a GT or 11-13k for a GTI

Several WRX clubs member all over Aus have bought VW for a change and without exception they have sold them and got back into Subarus... VW own just about every European car company and non of them have a good report from anyone except those with deep pockets or buy them new and get rid of them after a few years. Japanese over European any day 100%..I often go to "dealer only" car auctions and watch Mercs , BMWs, Audis, VWs, Range Rovers etc etc go through cheap as chips or not even getting bids because the dealers have to give Warranties and there is always the potential to have to spend a fortune if something breaks. Japanese cars on the other hand pull much better money and there is always a lot of interest in them.. I bought this Audi A3 turbo for $4200 with 160ks in perfect condition... It had EXACTLY the same engine compartment as the GTi Golf.. It even had a huge VW stamped in the bottom of the engine block.. My neighbour's wife saw it and fell in love with it and despite me telling them not to buy it, he offered me $7k for it.. I am glad I tried to talk him out of it and my conscience is clear because it has been off the road more than it's been on the road. It was a lot of fun to drive but not really a performance car. Problem is, any "common fault" parts are all gone from the Audi wrecks so you have to buy new parts.. and VW (read audi, bmw etc etc parts are expensive) so are Subaru.. but they rarely fail. We have 8 cars, all Japanese and we spend very little on repairs. My youngest daughters 09 Impreza has almost 400,000ks and is a great reliable car still.



PS... You will easily get that performance (0-100 in 5ish sec) out of a REX well within your budget. Is the VW an AWD ????? not that that matters...LOL...

A 2.5t GT is about 120kw atw stock.

A tune, on stock should net 140atw.

With a 3” turbo back, upgrade fuel pump & 3 port ebcs around 150-170atw.

The stock vf46 makes a nice big hit of power around 3000rpm, then tapers off.

Personally, I reckon there’s little point to having more than 15psi max with a vf46.

If you through a VF52 into the mix with a retune, what does that get to I wonder. I know Vincent has good power with a VF52. Am I correct in thinking that because a lot of the GT bits are unique to the Libs and you can't use rex bits ( eg VF22 that is perfect for a 2.5 but wont fit a liberty engine), they are like hens teeth second hand so you are forced to spend big bucks for new stuff which makes them an expensive car to mod ???

Vf52 is good for a safe 180-200atw with all the supporting mods, add maybe 10-20atw with e85.
Rough figures absolutely.

The stock postfl lib inlet mani is the offset throttlebody type common to g3 wrx & foz.

Vf46, 52 has a flange compressor cover to bolt to the stock tmic.
The process west tmic can accomodate either flanged or normal comp covers...

Inlet manifold conversions are rare simply because the composite manifold flows very well.

actually no the liberty can use ALOT of WRX/STI parts

250atw is possible with supporting mods on a new 257 STi short, and has been done on the 255 stock... but for how long is the question. We’ve seen a lot of stock engines blow bearings, ringlands or head gaskets when leaned on and this is especially true for my08 engines that didn’t receive warranty blocks.

So yes to make that power or over needs money spent to over build, detune and ensure headroom for reliability, imho.

Ah yes , the old "wind up the boost to get more power" trick.. Works well on a 257 but on stock Lib or even a wrx motor, not so much..It is as common as the "my car now makes 250kwtsatw" followed 3 weeks later with "my transmission just shattered like glass" ... or the ever popular " I just had a heavy duty, you beaut clutch fitted last week and now my gearbox has fallen out onto the road" .... you gotta get that balance right.

The formula for one of our members: Coyote, a respected tuner, was e85, 12psi and 180kw atw on basic supporting mods.

check out my signature for a flat 5 sec 0-100 if going auto... Libs are fun to drive... Early DSG autos can be problematic.

Less chance of issues in a manual, but need to look after them either way.
