I haven't heard of a massive numbers of premature turbo failures of the VF46. But some definitely do fail, but it is more common as they age. There are plenty of turbos that last well past 200,000km. But when they fail catastrophically, it can be $$$s if pieces go into the engine.
You can upgrade the turbo, but it's not as important as eg making sure the engine is happy with the tune (checking Learning View for knock tables).
