modified car insurance

Postby Libacy Gt » Tue Jun 27, 2017 4:19 pm

Hi
Hope this is in the correct thread.

Just wondering for those who have modified cars how much insurance you pay and with what company? Just got quoted from shannons for $4800 per year for my car as it is right now with my mods.!!!!! And agreed value only $25,000, for more they have to personally look at the car. Youi quoted a similar price.

Lol that's insane.

I have the same car - auto MY10 GT wagon and it costs me about $1k per year with Shannons. Yes, it's completely stock but surely that doesn't warrant a $3800 increase?!

Mine would be lower but my wife reversed into a low brick pillar 18 months ago in a previous car so premiums are now higher :(

How old are you?

I told him all my mods, I have them listed in my profile, I'm 28 and let's just say I live in an area in Sydney that I'm assuming won't have the best reputation amongst insurance companies.

And I'm planing a major build soon which will triple the amount of mods I have.

Going to have to keep the car in another suburb to get lower premiums. Damn these prejudices.

That sucks! Still, I wouldn't think the area would make a $3800 difference. Shannons are good with mods - they want people who mod their cars because it means they're enthusiasts.

I'm 27 (was 26 when I took out the policy).

I have never been with Shannons as they always give me crazy high premium quotes (im accident free and rating 1)

i would suggest you try underwriting insurers

http://enthusiast.com.au/

https://www.lsvcarinsurance.com.au/

http://www.famousinsurance.com.au/

I was with enthusiast on my wrx, now im with lumley on my lib
famous cover track days, so thats a plus also.
all 3 above gave me fantasic quotes, i simply choose the highest agreed payout i can get

Sydney is the worst place to insure your car, especially if you're in the "higher risk" areas. Our insurance prices are literally double or more compared to other parts of the country. But $4,800 is insane, you're not a 20 year old in a Lamborghini :P

I've heard some good things about Famous. I had my Skyline under Lumley for a couple of years before switching to NRMA VVC (I hardly drive it so I have cheap insurance for it). My Lib is with NRMA (multi policy discount) but stock, ~$1,200/year for market value (28 year old). You should be looking at roughly $1.5k per year with mods.

Any insurance company is only as good as the claims they allow.

I have been insured with Shannons for over 25 years with both modified and daily drives (plus home and contents) and have made a few claims over the years.

Not once did they give any headaches and allowed the panel beater to do exactly what was needed to repair the car correctly. I cant help but wonder if insurers that have slightly lower premiums would do this.

Agreed RX, this is one of my major considerations with insurance.

Being in my mid thirties is an advantage so the extra few hundred dollars is worth the peace of mind.
