I would strongly recommend having it inspected by a subaru specialist mechanic such as revzone, gotitrex, HCW. This will give you a much better idea of what you're up for.

I am amazed that HardwareBob did not say "head-gaskets"?

All Gen4 EJ25 H4 engines will suffer a head gasket oil leak during their lifetime.
Check the vehicles service history,
If the gaskets have not been replaced then take a good LONG & HARD look under the car at the seam where the Cylinder Block and Heads meet. Both sides.

It'a funny that it's urgent and then suddenly he doesn't need to sell it right now.

I would say you definitely made the right choice to give it a miss. Also I know a lot of mechanics will miss early stages of headgaskets leaking internally because you can't see it from the outside and you don't get many signs unless you take it for a long hot drive. They don't have time for that.

Best thing to do is drive the car for a while and then look for bubbles in the overflow bottle.

And with any used ej25 just plan to do headgaskets unless they have been done recently by a good subaru specialist.
