Engine problems. Not sure what!! Please help

Postby ynerdem » Tue Sep 06, 2016 5:15 pm

Hi guys,

ive had a bottom end knock on start up with my 04 Liberty GT
someone has told me that i need an engine replacement but the knock goes and comes.
I am located in Northern Suburbs Victoria.
BB autos have been my go to so far and they have offered me certain options but just not sure what i should do.
Ive got a 2.0R that i drive around so im in a pickle with what i should do.

Should i sell the 2.0R and get a nice engine built on the 04 or get rid of the Liberty GT.

Ive been told new engine with STI block will cost me 4-5k
Or i can get a second hand one installed for about 3k.

Or should i get it fixed sell it and then go and get a nice MY11 WRX?

:?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Give me some advice please guys

Sorry to hear about your engine problem. It all depends on how much you want to keep your Liberty.

The prices you quoted are pretty good - they're what you'd expect from a decent independent mechanic.

The cheapest option would be a used GT motor (non-STi). But if you are going to go to all that effort, then saving a tiny amount on the engine doesn't make sense, considering the cost of labour.

An 04 GT isn't worth a lot these days, so does it make financial sense to put 3-4k into a car that would only sell for barely over $10-$12k (a bit more depending on kms, condition and if rarer ones like manual or wagon)?
You'd obviously get a lot less if you sold it with the engine problem, but it's a calculation you have to make.

Is the extra performance (and probably interior spec) over your 2.0R worth it for you? If so, go ahead and spend the money to fix it, and you'll have a nice reliable car for a long time to come. I haven't driven a 11 WRX, but I usually find the Libertys to be much more refined. And I need the space the WRX just doesn't have. All depends on your needs, money and emotional attachments.
