08+ Spec R Recaro's seats fitment

Postby jacks-GTB » Sat Jul 23, 2016 5:46 pm

Hey everyone,

I know guys have put these seats in their Gen 4 Libs....but can't remember who...

dr20t has the JDM STI seats but I think they are slightly different to the spec r seats

I just want some more info on fitment & air bag plugs....whether they are bolt up straight up or you have to modify your rails...thanks ahead

Cheers Jack

SH30RB installed Recaro's in his preface lib. Whilst not 08+, he may be able to give you some guidance as to whether they are straight bolt-on.

I got this plan. It's called 'Save Ass'. And the way it works is this - I slip outta one of these windows and I run like a bastard!

Evo 9 recaros require adaptor rails.

From memory I think those STi seats need the rails modified. Something like 3 out of the 4 holes line up.

GR seats should fit right up, airbag plug is different iirc.
Just swap the seat or body side airbag plugs or buy a set of male/female generic plugs from eBay or any wrecking yard.

Ben is correct, airbag connectors are different.

Messing with airbag wiring isn't something to take lightly - small mistakes lead to explosive results. Ideally, you don't want to cut the plugs off the chassis or the seats, so what you want to do then is to make up a set of adapter cables that plug between the stock Liberty chassis plugs and the stock WRX seat plugs. To do this, you want top cut cables (with plugs) off a set of wrecked liberty seats and plugs off a wrecked WRX chassis, and then solder the two together.

I was looking at doing this for a while, I ended up putting it into the "too hard" basket, particularly after I changed my focus to the track car over upgrading my road car (which I rarely drive any more now I have a Mitsubishi Challenger as a daily now).

These also sit a bit higher than factor seats and for a tall person could be uncomfortable. Just something else to keep in mind.

Good to know, I nearly went for the set on SubyClub recently but something even better (for me) popped up.
As Mick said, some caution is needed with the airbag plugs, but cutting/swapping is afaik perfectly viable as a GenV owner on LGT installed airbag seats direct from Recaro Germany, using the correct adapter rails and universal airbag male/female plugs.
I'd simply look up the correct polarity from the FSM before proceeding as the wiring will likely have different colours...

Ichiban in Sydney point blank refused to do any adapting of airbag plugs at all. That is likely a liability thing - but they clearly believe there is a potential issue when you play in this area...

Yeah iirc the ADR laws actually forbid anything other than like-for-like airbag seat swaps, it was discussed on the SubyClub specR FS post.
However my insurance company was fine with preFL seats into a postFL car, ymmv.

Per txt - two options :

Buy the adapter plugs for the seat airbags from Japan - Graeme has done this and not too expensive from memory

Or take the airbags out of the liberty seats and have a motor trimmer / upholsterer fit them into the grb seats

The second option will obviously cost a lot more and its not guaranteed they will do it

Why go to such lengths when they're just 2 pole plugs, albeit with the dual locking mechanisms?
Am I missing some crucial info? :)

Can anyone give feedback on spec R seats fitment and comfort?
I've heard they don't suit larger framed gents, not sure if that means height and width, I have more of the former ;)

Here's the vendor for GRB STi seat swap into BP/BP airbag plug conversion harness.

https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w226308493

If the link goes dead the title is
"WRX STi GRB GVB GVF VAB Impreza genuine seat replacement side air bag conversion harness coupler on one touch sheet necessities".

originally:
WRX STi GRB GVB GVF VAB インプレッサ純正シートを換装 サイドエアバッグ変換ハーネス カプラーオン ワンタッチ シート交換の必需品 1

Buy these via www.jessestreeter.com, Subie Sales on FB https://www.facebook.com/groups/733818963384074/ or Import Monster etc.

Use google translate or chrome to do the heavy lifting :)
