Its a stock shifter.

lol people it is a stock shifter Q has admitted that..
but his point was someone could use this to mod it into a custom made shortshifter..

If I learned anything from customer service, it's that people simply do not want to read.

Yes i read the ad, but do you know what a short shifter is?

That doesn't make a std shifter a short shifter. To make that into a short shifter, you have to change the linkage point higher and also the angle of the conector to the fork has to be adjusted so that it doesn't hit anything.

Heh-heh. Thanks for the clarification Mo. I'm sure the average user won't know that and will end up getting it thinking they can easily modify it to be a short shifter.

Technically a short shifter is anything which reduces the throw distance to change gear, shortening the shaft will naturally reduce the distance travelled to change gear..

How ever.. as Mo so correctly states this is not a "proper" short shifter.. just a dodgy DIY.. bit like a milo can really

Shortening the shaft will reduce the throw required to change gear, hence the name. Short Shifter.

Anyway, lots of people on LegacyGT.com have done the mod and I just thought someone might like to try it.

I think it means 'short' as in you'll have to reach lower to grab the knob. Mo was spot on for a true short shifter which actually reduces the throw of the gear lever, as in physically REDUCES the throw...
The actual throw in this mod stays the same, your shifter is just shorter giving the impression the throw is shorter...

What a debate about what is a short shifter and what is not. Thanks guys, now I think I understand what is a short shifter and what I would call a "stubby shifter"

Holden Astra SRI has a stubby gear lever which I believe they were trying to make a "short shifter" but there is still a lot of travel between the gears.

Guys would you refer to the STI 6 speed manual a short shifter?

I've driven cars that have had the gear stick shortened - one was a swift GTi. This "short shifter" actually made it hard to change gears quickly - my arm had to extend forward more on 1st, 3rd and 5th gears. And almost everytime i hit 3rd my knuckles would slam into the cd player!!!

I had a C's short shifter on my old WRX - now that was a proper short shifter.

STi WRX? yes that's a proper short shifter. Don't know abt the Liberty t/b STi tho...

The differences are the distance between the bottom (where it sits in the car) and where the link connects up and the linck to the the gear box is bent at an angle to allow for the higher conection to the gear stick.

There's a reason for that - it works properly and won't screw up your selector fork

I had a Perrin short shifter in my Forester and it was great, but I don't find the Subaru boxes really like to be shifted too quickly, certainly not like my old celica with the supra box, you could bang that thing through the gears...

The 6 speed shifter in my Spec B is OK, it could be shorter but I haven't found a decent aftermarket SS one for it yet.
