Oil catch can

Oil catch can

Anyone have one or think they are necessary??

If so, what do you have and how much??..

With retune, I think rev limiter is set higher .. At or above 7000RPM..

From what I can see they are under $100 for a decent one..

Oil Catch Cans

Oil Catch Can DiagramCrank-case ventilation is an important issues to deal with on a turbocharged engine like the WRX, but what is it? Every time a cylinder fires, a very small percentage of combustion gas by-passes the piston rings (imaginatively called blow-by) ending up in the crankcase of the engine. Added to this is the amount of air that is displaced within the crankcase by the action of the pistons moving up and down in the cylinder bores, with the crankshaft spinning away in the middle. This makes the interior of the WRX engine a decidedly drafty place, and all this pressurised gas needs somewhere to go. It cannot be vented to the atmosphere as crack-case gas contains vaporised engine oil, weak acids, hydrocarbons and other nasties.

Normally crankcase gas is drawn off and recirculated back into the engine air intake to be burned, instead of ending up in the atmosphere. This is not so much of a problem on a stock engine, but becomes an issue on engines that are modified and are making more power. It is inescapable, as power outputs climb, so does cylinder pressures causing ever increasing quantities of blow-by. So much so, at high RPMs, in addition to gas, small amounts of liquid oil can be discharged from the crankcase breather pipes and back into the engine. This is dangerous to the health of your engine for the following reasons:

* Oil can make its way into boost control solenoids disrupting boost control
* Intercoolers loose efficiency when coated with heavy oil on the inside
* Oil mist or liquid oil drawn into the air-fuel charge entering the engine has serious consequences, as its low-flashpoint temperature (compared to petrol) will cause it to self-ignite resultingin severe detonation.

Fitting an oil breather catch-can is an easy solution in response to the potential problems. It connects into the OE breather system, re-directs all crankcase gas through a series of internal baffling to separate out oil and other residues. This "cleaned" gas is then returned back to the engine as before. Not all catch-cans are created equal, and things to look for in a good one are larger diameter breather hoses, some sort of sight glass for inspecting oil level, and an easy way of draining any collected oil. Catch cans also need to have at least a minimum capacity of one litre in order to be effective. A worthwhile modification for a WRX at even mild power levels, it does become mandatory at anything greater than 180kW ATW. A monster tune without one is madness.

That’s what sparked me to ask the question.. I am up around 180kW at the moment.. So should I be really be considering this??.. Or is it just MRT hype to make more people buy their products??.. I know there are a lot of cars on here at and above 180kW.. So just wondering if anyone one on here has one fitted??.. I did a quick search and couldn’t find any threads specifically on catch cans..

i know leo has one after he told me he took off his intercooler and it was full of oil.

oil catch can has nothing to do with rev limiter set higher. If you want your rev limiter set higher then get your tuner to adjust and tune for it.

I fitted a catch can to my modified MY99 WRX after I raised boost to 19psi, I noticed alot of blow by in the intercooler. After fitment of catch can, oil disapeared from TMIC.

I think this modification is more for peice of mind as I have mates with 200kw+ WRX/STi's running strong without them.

I was using the AVO catch can and can't recall how much.

I realise this :lol: lol.. But as is states in the MRT newsletters, the problem of ‘blow by’ increases with higher RPM.. and with the retune they have increased my RPM max cut off.. So with this increased RPM max & more power, I am thinking it cant hurt to get a oil catch can ...

Adam. how much boost a you running?

i think you will only need it if running high boost, from what i remember from another post your only running 15psi???.

My thoughts are for a couple of hundred bucks how can u go wrong? When the Lib is 50k+

Jump on to ozlib there is a thread by kosti on a group buy they did on catch cans for the gen 4's

oil catch cans are a wank on a healthy engine if not set up right

99% of catch cans fitted do jack

if set up right you will increase responce , torque and power

I'm curious to know what that 180kW (I'm assuming on MRT's hub-pack dyno?) equates to on a Dyno Dynamics or Dynamic Test Systems dyno. :wink:

Any Tips???...I know with my last car if you disconnected the line completely you got better response out of the car, not recommended long term thou as it helps your manifold stay a bit cleaner.. It kind of makes sense (having an oil catch can) as you are burning cleaner air.. The air that is pulled through the manifold if full of oil vapour, if you can filter this somehow you have less ‘harder to combust’ pollutants in the air your combusting..

And there is always this forum, which is worth its weight in gold.. Its has helped me get this far, when a few months back I knew sweet nothing about turbo cars and how to get more power out of them.. Now I own a Lib that blows me away when compared to how it was stock..

No hub dyno for me… I had the work done through a reseller up in Qld.. They guy is really good.. He spent over 12 hours on my car on a Friday a few weeks back, just to get all the work done in one day for me.. I am sure the last place he wanted to be, was stuck in his workshop with me on a Friday night, but he kept going on the dyno late into the evening until he was happy with the tune.. He also wasn’t all about the hard sell from the beginning, just little things like not recommending I not get the full MRT exhaust as “it sounds a bit tinny with the dump pipe, but if I keep my STi mufflers it will give a much better note, without losing any real performance”.. He organises track days and always replies to my emails the same day (and I have a lot of them) & a lot of them aren’t anything do to with any products he sells.. The 180kW is pretty average for Libs with similar mods.. Just did a quick count and he has replied to over 50 of my emails in the last few months since I purchased the Lib & everything he has recommended I have been happy with.. So even thou there are quite a few people out here not happy with MRT at all, there are definitely a few resellers that pick up the slack..
