SI Drive Cover

Postby peadya100 » Fri Aug 07, 2015 9:59 am

Hey guys,
i've just heard from Ben and sadly he's unable to continue with his SI drive cover project.

I was going to make a cover for myself and a few members, but in light of Ben's cover not going ahead, I thought I’d put it out to the rest of the forum.

Due to the cost of setting up the first cover, I can only make the one design.

Below i've got a couple of options mocked up, I’ll try and keep everyone happy and come up with the most popular design, but I won’t be able to make everyone happy, so if people could please understand there will have to be some small sacrifices made by all.

Once the design is finalised, I will 3D print some pieces for test fitting, and once I’m happy with the fitment, I’ll go into production. The lead time on production won’t be more than a week or 2.

At this stage they will only be available in stainless or polished aluminium - depends on the price of material.
If people want different colours, they will have to organise anodising themselves – it’s not that hard.

Please bear in mind, that it’s REALLY hard to make a cylinder look fancy haha
So there’s not a lot that can be done to make them look all that different to the Prova one.

The only real points of difference will be the knurling patterns (textured part on the side), and the lip/rim around the top edge of the cover, and whether the hole for the LED is circular or slotted.

(Model 1) There has been some interest in matching it to the mcintosh stereo knobs. I have made a model of this, however we can’t cheaply do the 2 tone of the mcintosh, so it doesn’t really have the same appeal in my eyes.

(Model 2) is a copy of the Prove style, with horizontal knurling instead of diagonal. I wont bother modelling the diagonal knurling as we already know what the Prova one looks like.

There are quite a few more models completed, I just don’t have the time to print them today. So watch this space in the next few days.

Thanks.

(Model 3) with this one, and all future ones ill post, there will be 3 seemingly the same. But the difference is the upper lip/edge design.

I quite like this knurling arrangement. Id like something that looks a little bit classy, and not as industrial looking as the Prova one. But that's just my opinion :D

(Model 4) The same as above, but with the knurling on the entire vertical face.

I like model 4 the best, I think it looks a bit more 'finished' than model 1 and I like the cylindrical led hole

However model 3 is a close second imo

I think 3 is my favourite, but I honestly like them all. Initially (in the other thread) I thought that a McIntosh clone would be the best route to go.

I do like the Prova one aswell though.

This is tough! :D

I worry about model 1 being too plain in 1 colour. And I don't know for certain yet but if they have to machine the vertical grooves it may up the cost. Where as knurling is just stamped in and takes no time at all.

I like 3 and 4 best too.. but this isn't a dictatorship, so we'll let the people vote.... and then do it my way anyway

Just a thought, but a flat top and sides would look really sharp and crisp in my opinion. Might keep the costs down a fraction too.

Kinda like this:

+1 for Model 1 8).

I will look into partial anodising. There are companies that use various methods incl masking off (or covering in wax/silicone) a section that is to remain uncoated. It'd be easier if the centre section were to stay silver, but the reverse (like the McIntosh dials) would look best imo.

I see how this design might look plain to some, but the totally flat top/sides is even more plain - and it looks very classy (in a sort of minimalist way). So Model 1 is the best of both worlds for me.
