Buying a car privately

Postby sundayDriver » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:29 pm

I'm thinking of buying a 2nd car (ust when everybody else is unloading theirs). I'm thinking of buying privately too but I'm not sure what I need to do to make sure everything is ok.

I know I need to check REVS to make sure it's not stolen.
I know I have to check it doesn't have any unpaid fines (speeding or parking). Is this with REVS too?
I have to check that there's no debt against the car - who do i check with?

And the seller is supposed to give a road worthy certificate that is less than 30 days old.

Is there any thing else I need to know? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

PS - I'm in the ACT.

Revs will tell you if the car:
- Is/was reported stolen
- Has any encumbrances (financed or not)
- Regarded as a repairable write off

Not sure how you can tell if there are outstanding fines or not. But if they were outstanding before you bought the car, i dont think it should matter as the transfer date is recorded at the RTA which the seller must sign and date at the back of the rego papers.
