I think it depends on what your trading it in against, whether or not they want your car on their lot etc. If the new car is a model that's in demand then they prefer you to sell yours somewhere else and come back with the cash. When I bought my Lib from Denlo last year they were happy to give me an extra $3k on my trade in (Magna Sports) because there was a boatload of Libs already on the way here so it meant they had one sold as soon as it landed. Plus it was an established model. When my brother in law bought his '05 3.0R they had only just been released and he got an absolute sh*t trade-in on his RS Lib.

No... you're being taken for a ride! Assuming it's still in good condition, a 3.0R-B of that age would sell retail for between $34k and $36k... well a wagon would anyway. Sedans go for less because there's more to choose from and they're cheaper to start with.

Have you negotiated yet or is the dealer going through the sales motions to try you on for size and see if you'll wear the sucker punch?

If you haven't already, do your own research and get your own facts. Don't take a dealers word on vehicle value.

These are good places to start.

Real and perceived value are two very different things with used cars. But clearly, if you bought the car new, then your depreciation is accelerated in the 1st two years because you paid stamp duty on the new value of the car, GST, dealer delivery etc... which is all money down the drain.

Also, if the car is only 18months old, you've got pretty high kilometres on it. That won't help your case, but keep it well presented and sell it privately you'll do much better!

What surprised me was 18 months ago I traded a 5 yo ?? B4 Liberty with 198000 k and trade in on paper value $30000 which was around 50% what I payed 5 years previous which I was happy with. Now this Lib has dropped to the same %%% in 18 months. It looks like Subaru's are now so popular they suffer the same as Holdens And Fords

This whole exercise in buying a new car is pissing me off wish I could just keep my 3RB which Im more than happy with as I know I made the right decision 18 months ago when I was looking at other cars .As for Mercs they and BMW are pretentious (making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious)

Sold to wholesaler at no profit for $26,000.

Wholesaler must allow at least $1,000 to prepare for sale (yours may not need it, but other will need more). We are at $27,000.

Wholesaler is not greedy and only makes 10% profit when selling it to a yard that wants it. We are at $29,700.

Dealer must offer warranty, pay for advertising, lease costs and staff. Let's say he runs the tightest ship in the land an can do that on only a 15% profit margin. We are now at $34,115.

Then add GST and you're starting down the barrel of $37,570, or more than you reckon a good wagon is worth.

Yeah good call coyote. If the change over money is important to you BUDDAH, sell it privately mate... then you're not lining the pockets of all those middlemen car dealers! I don't know about you, but I HATE giving my money to other people when I get no value from it!

A suggestion, if you don't have the funds to bridge that finance gap, borrow from the bank what you reckon you can sell the Lib for privately and take the risk (risk = $$$). Even if you come up $1500 short after a sale, that's still better than $5000 short after a trade-in!

The offer is low, either the dealer has no interest in your RB or he has no real interest in selling you something else.

04 Lib GT Premium .. with 40700k on the clock.

Redbook says trade in price is 25300 - 28300 for avg kms of 60k-100k.
The website of the dealer (who uses Glass's Guide) says 26900 - 31500 on avg kms of 67k.

I laughed when I was offered $19k. Their explanation was about the market and how Redbook and Glass's Guide are overinflated etc. Big discrepancy there....

04GT Lib premium, 97k on clock, offered 22k, and they said they would put it on for 32k or so.

He said to me to sell it privately as you are never going to make the same money back on a trade in.
