MY04 Lib Clock fading in and out

Hey guys,

I have sorted this issue but thought i would post the solution here.

Symtoms are as follows:

The time/outside temperature/fuel consumption display unit has a mind of it's own as to if it will display or not. It acts like there is a loose connection, tap the unit a few times and it sometimes it begins to work.

Occasionally it displays as if it is receiving a low voltage, ir some parts are dimly lit.

Turns out to be exactly the same problem as with the forester clocks, just that in this case the resistor is underneath the display. Which makes it a bit more fiddly to fix.

However it was sufficient to just desolder the 2 legs on one side of the vfd display and then bend it up out of the way.

The culprit is R4 (marked "511") the solder joints here were in a bad shape and in need of a re-solder, I also resoldered the transistor TR3, since it also didnt look great either.

Now it is working perfectly!

Thanks :) Mine is starting to do the same thing. Now I just have to go and buy a soldering kit and learn how to solder. Any recommendations on what to buy?

Don't get a crap 240V soldering iron, total WOFTAM.

I just did some checking on ebay, and this seems pretty cool:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2in1-Solderi ... 1c3a83458b

I have a DSE soldering station which cost me $50

Thanks Matt. Do you find the DSE station okay?

Yeah it's great, I managed to solder this, and it's the trickiest thing I've ever soldered:

Sweet. I'll go to DSE and get one before I give up on life ;)

If you haven't soldered before, please get someone to show you how or find video on YouTube.
It's not hard, but the correct technique will guarantee a good solder joint with no damage to the pad, pcb or component. And a whole lot less frustration :-)
I don't recommend attempting soldering on a flexible pcb (as hardware bob has done above) without a fair bit a practice

Got to love a simple fix to a common factory fault.

Nice one.
