New P Plater car restrictions (nsw)

Postby agro » Fri Jul 18, 2014 9:13 am

Anyone heard anything about this? Looks like the NSW government is improving the laws and letting young drivers drive turbo cars if they are low powered. This even include the newer liberty gt's and even 2014 wrx (only the auto though).

Potential issues I see is the decision is based on the stock cars performance and will quite easily be manipulated.

So my car just had its market broadened :D

Good info. Is this a manufacturers ploy or the gov admitting the original incarnation of the laws was ineffective / misaligned to the intent of the act?

stupid idea, turbo vehicles are soo easily modified. turbo skylines are legal, silvias are legal, but 350z and skyline 350gt variants are all illegal.

i feel like they didnt think this through, reports say they changed the law due to new cars being turbo for fuel efficiency, yet they allow all vehicles legal with a "limit" i doubt they'd have a portable dyno.

If they went through their old plan of making turbo vehicles legal for late model cars that would be fine but now the roads are now even more risky with these new drivers thinking their professional racers.

I myself am a provisional driver and hate this rule

130kw/t is wayyyyyyyy too high. Even reducing it to 120kw/t rules out a lot of cars that are otherwise, quick in their own right.

I see the sense in changing the current law, kw/t works much better. But why 130? It was primarily changed after manufacturers like Volkswagen presented their new Golf turbo (1.4l turbo pushing out a massive 90kw or 75kw/t) to the RMS, claiming the turbo combined with a small displacement was purely for efficiency and combined with new car technology made for a safer vehicle for inexperienced drivers to drive.

How naive to believe that a 17 or 18 year old male P plater would buy one.

Fuck the lot of them, NA 4 cylinder cars under 100kw only, that'll keep them safe ;)

Hey, you are right, it appears to be pretty inconsistent, some 9-12 sedans and wagons are banned but others aren't, the weight and power over the GEN V range is not that different. Weird!

Seems like they probably used the Commodore as the benchmark. SV6 is about 125kw/t. Idiots.

I was driving turbos on my L's and P's and I'm still alive.

It all comes down to attitude and education.

I think it's a good idea that they've eased the restrictions.

The problem isn't the cars it's the drivers, it is too easy to get a license to drive here, make everyone at least semi capable of handling a car in a dangerous situation and accidents will go down.

I totally agree with 'attitude and education', a lot of younger drivers (not all. not even mentioning mums in big-ass 4wd's and stuff) think they're indestructible and easily get tempted to break rules. I think mandatory training (like for motorbike licence) and maybe tougher penalties should apply. I'm guessing people will get a crap load of racing challenges on the road once this starts lol.

It would also be tough to enforce if cops can't tell if the car's gotten power mods done ..

I have never understood this theory of its easier to get a licence now. How many people used to get there licence just by going to the local cop shop?

Better training and a better attitude is what is needed, for ALL drivers
