Ok guys, after cruising with a bunch of Liberty's, 15 plus cars, it was pretty good to have these CB's.

Thanks Chris for lending me your spare one :D

Does anyone know which brands are good? Uniden, Motorola?

2 watt or 5 watt?

Will be in use for Snowboarding and Lib Cruises :D :D

Know of any good places to grab some from Sydney? I checked some online places and was thinking of going this one.

If you are going to get anything, you should spend about $100 or so on one minimum.

I have used heaps, small, big, cheap etc, but cheap is just that and you would have wished you spent that little bit extra.

That looks like a good deal mate.

Trieu,
I've been using the GME TX610 for about 4 years now. Great little handheld unit. It takes 4 AAA rechargeables which last a good two days use. It's a 1 Watt unit selling for about $80 these days. You'll get up to two kilometres line of site comms in built up areas. A bit more in the country unless it's hilly. Don't expect to talk through the mountain when you're boarding though. A 5 Watt might do that (not sure) but they're still pretty bulky units these days.

Cheers,
Deucer.

Trieu, if you're snowboarding and want GPS as well, check out the Garmin Rhino 520. Has UHF and GPS built in. Costs about 550 but it is rechargable etc and has a 5 watt UHF.

Other than that, I have a couple of Uniden 1 watts that I use, not much good past about 1km though.

If anyone wants a 4.5dB (I think?) antenna, let me know. I got one spare sitting around. Comes with brackets etc. to mount on boot.

We've been testing a Rhino for on bike coms (big BMW offroad bikes) and it works really well. Is weather proof and has an OK sized screen. Broadcast range is pretty good.

GPS has full breadcrumb features as well as turn by turn if you buy the maps (if you already have a Garmin you should have the maps, register new serial number and use your existing maps)

Yeap yeap, Frankie gave me excellent advice, just gathering more cause the 5 watt'ers are expensive.

Looking at some alternatives and also how many I can get, so if there is another cruise, we can share em out.

I think a 2 watt is ok for me, one with the dangling cord that looks like Frankie's

Trust me. Get a 5w, don't go half ass.... cos you will end up upgrading and wasting your money.

For those who wern't present

I picked my one off ebay, Uniden uh078sx 5watt, extra long battery time, spare battery, breakout box, and you can also get a car charger. Antenna can also be upgraded if you want to use a real serious antennae for your car.

You really need the range, road wise it helps heaps for cruises, long road trips. esp with lights/ traffic / twistys etc.

In the winterwonderland, its water proof, and again range, I get communication from Base to Peak, no problems, other smaller radios drop out half way down the mountain. Breakout box is a must cos its shiethouse when you have gloves, rummage thru your pockets and try to press the button, not to mention dropping the damm thing.. (yes its happened to lots of my friends) Just chuck it in your camel back and box on your shoulder strap.
Some cheaper radios also don't have the breakout box plug, they may have VOX, but they don't work very well. Plus I have my phone and ipod plugged into my lid.

The uniden is also built like a tank, Bonus, if you stack bad - yes i do that a lot.

There are repeaters can help extend range, but they arn't always around.

The Garmin GPS and friends option looks pretty niffty.

SUMMARY: ....JUST DO ITTTTTTT - Don't skimp, Geta good one, cheap ones are Mickey Mouse.
Just like Cars, MORE POWA!!!!!
