Car serviced yesterday, CV boot splits today

Had to get it fixed urgently to lead a cruise this Sunday...

Bugger.

This is what I did when mine went pop - lost virtually no grease, gave me a few days to source a replacement

Very easy job to DIY incase anyone is wondering.

Replaced the whole shaft , or just fitted new boots?
Some great videos on utube about replacing boots without dismantling the joint. Wish I had seen them before I did the 928 boots.

Usually much less labour than just trying to do the boots.

Well the story from Subaru is:
The replacement drive-shaft that came from their supplier was a bit longer than it should have been, so the hub nut tightened down on to the end of the thread rather than pressing onto the bearing, allowing the bearing to float around.
This chewed out the spline on the end of the drive shaft and inside the hub, so today they installed a second new drive-shaft, and also completely replaced the whole hub assembly.

Here is the shaft that was installed last Thursday, that was taken out again today.

... and would you believe, I heard a metal-on-metal scraping noise from the same wheel while driving home tonight. Took the wheel off yet again, and discovered the bottom edge of the metal shield behind the brake disk was rubbing on the disk. Just flexing it away a bit was enough to stop the noise.

That joint looks fine, however it doesn't look like any Subaru one I've seen.

I've bent those dust covers by accident so many times I can't count, always notice it on the road test though and bend it back off

They are very flimsy.

Those non-genuine shafts are never nice to deal with.. I have been down that road recently.

After all the stuffing around I just ended up rebuilding my original shaft!
