Heya guys,

So i went down to my local Subaru dealership,
and i had a look @ the my08 liberty 3.0R Spec B..

Very very nice car, & yes the rear vents are still there...
still a bit tight on headroom etc.. only minor changes that i really didn't notice without comparing them side by side..

Anyways, they want 58k drive away..
fair enough he said he will give me couple G's off discounts..
but i know i can haggle em down a bit more + im trading in my old libby.

So ill be purchasing it next month..

I was wondering what you guys think i should aim/bargain for?

Im trading in my Clean Subaru Liberty 2003 GX Limited Edition (Auto)

What trade in price do you think i will get?
everyones telling me around 18-19-20, who knows?

You are buying the new car at prime time so you will be paying a bit more than if you buy towards the end of the year or june/july.

You are never going to get a good price for a trade in plus discount off the new car - you get either one. Best would be to sell the old car privately and get the best possible deal on the new one.

I agree with Mo_GT's comments. The book value is generally what the dealer works with and then it comes down to several factors, how long the MY has been available, how much of his commission the salesman is willing to forego to make the sale and the availability of the new car. When I bought my MY07 GT-B in April I finished up getting $3k more for my trade-in than the book value. I know the book value was spot on because I'd looked it up first and that's what I was offered by another dealer. Your looking at a brand new model so they'll trim your trade-in. Good luck.

Mo is spot on!

Sell privately and then bargain the price.

Trading in will only give them more advantages. They may be giving you more for the trade but they certainly wouldnt give u the discounts. It comes down to the change over price.

I suggest u go to a few dealers before you make ur choice.

To be honest with you, I highly doubt you'll be able to get 18-20g as a trade in.

We recently purchased an MY07 Outback - Traded a clean MY00 Outback and the most that was offered out of 3 dealers was $9,000..

If you have the time up your sleeve, then I think private is the way to go. Even if you're able to get $500 more than the dealer's willing to give, then you find yourself ahead anyway..

Also check out things like The Trading Post and local papers to get a feel what other peeps are asking for similar cars. Evan eBay. That way if you enquire about a trade-in you'll have an idea of the street value of your car. As has already been said private sale might be the only way to get a decent return given that you are buying a new "year model" at the wrong time of the year.

Asking price is not going to be anywhere close to indicating street value as pple often ask too much, have no response to the ads and then keep reducing the advertised price.

Pple like redbook, NRMA, etc base their valuations of actual sale price as in transfer documents.

To give u an example I went to trade my 2001 Honda and the dealers would only give me 12k. So a quick up yours and I sold it in the local paper for 20k it took 4 weeks but hey it was an extra 8k in my pocket.
