Well, I've never been one afraid to rock the boat so here's my 2c worth:
I HATE people that sit in the right hand lane when they are not overtaking, and when they are not consistently driving the speed limit.
We could start the mother of all arguments about speed limits, who sets, them, why they are set where they are, how they are policed, and the state of the roads compared to the 'alleged safety reason' that is meant to be the main factor in setting speed limits. But instead I'll settle for the philosophical:
It is pure courtesy for you to move out of the way and consider other drivers who have the 'right' to drive how they want. If Michael Schumacher is behind me in an M5 I'm not going to sit in front of him in the right hand lane travelling 50/60kmph stick my tongue out at him and tell him "nah, nah, nah, nah na; you're not allowed to drive any faster than this" - because that would make me a pratt.
Driving in Europe is a perfect example of how those that can afford the car, and have confidence in their ability, are able to enjoy the benefits that brings, and those that drive the little shopping carts happily give way and everyone drives safely and effectively in concert.
Would we have as much undertaking, road rage, and as many accidents if we had less selfish and oblivious drivers?
Now I don't condone undertaking, that is a dangerous and silly pursuit, but again, how do you know the person driving erratically behind you isn't: carrying a pregnant wife, or a heart attack victim, and I'll even wear 'going to miss an airplane' as an excuse. Who are you to sit in the right lane and play high and mighty???
I'll also agree that 8 times out of 10 it is a P plater. So there is plenty of evidence to support your angst about the driver behind just being a plain idiot. (P platers deserve all the pain they are bringing upon themselves, but again thats for another 'discussion')
My philosophy is overtake and move over, if someone wants to get through let them through IF there is somewhere for them to go; if you are in peak hour on the freeway and you're keeping up with the traffic well then they can get nicked, but don't play Mr. Arrogant just because you can.
And my final sign off is for all those that drive the speed limit in the right lane 'most of the time'. Is there anything more frustrating than the Camry or Accord, that putters along in the right hand lane at 95 along the flat, and slows to 80 every time they go up hill. Some of us have cruise control and want to get somewhere and not spend our lives, braking and accelerating for the benefit of those that want to sleep behind the wheel... Keep up with the traffic ahead or Move over.
