Suggestions on what to buy

Postby WeeGraeme » Thu Apr 05, 2007 10:20 pm

Hi, All.

After an absence of a few months, I'm lurking here again. Still counting the days until the end of my lease, although I've been told I've pretty much reached the point where I could look at replacing my car very soon.

I'm still undecided whether to get a Liberty or an Outback. (The Outback would allow me to take it away camping. The alternative is to buy a Liberty and maybe buy an old 4WD which I could take camping / offroading and now worry about it).

Even if I decide on the Liberty, I'm still not sure which I'll go for. I can lease or buy. If I buy, it will be a cheaper model. I've also heard that there are new models coming, so it's also a case of whether I should wait for the new model. What sort of discounts have they offered on end of model run-out vehicles in the past?

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts.

I just watched a TV advertisement for Advanced Medical Institute. The ad is for erectile dysfunction. They show that the guy in the Subaru wagon keeps going all night, but the guy in the Mitsubish sedan only seems to last a few seconds.

I'm not sure whether the message in that is to buy a Subaru or to buy a wagon.

LOL!!!!! I saw that ad! I thought it was tops!!!

WeeGraeme, why did you decide to go with a lease may i ask? Depending on what your purpose was, there is a better option.

I say go the Lib and get an old 4wd for camping. I always want to take my car to those long holiday trips for fishing and stuff, but then when i realise how dirty it can be. I never end up taking my car. Then I have to fight for shotgun!

Don't think there'd be a new Liberty for a couple of years yet - i'd expect a new model end 2009.

The BL5 /BP5 model was released in 2003? Subaru tends to keep their models for a 7 year run with a facelift in the middle.

I can salary sacrifice a novated lease. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the better option.

I think the Liberty sounds like a plan. I just keep changing my mind about which model I should go for. :-)

Is it a novated lease that you must go through at work? They are abit more difficult as most often you dont have a choice to go external to find a better deal elsewhere.

Do you rec any car allowance as an option?

Hate to be the obvious one, but you're asking what to buy on a Liberty forum...

I reckon you should get um..... a LIBERTY, andy why not make it a GT so you can have some fun while you're at it.

If you're keen on off roading an Outback is not gonna be that great, lets face it. Go and buy an old banger 4WD, take it out bush and have some fun with that too.

Yes, I am. My current vehicle is the first I've ever leased, so I'm not sure how easy or painful it will be.

Yes, it is a novated lease through work. I didn't know much about it when I went through the process the first time, so I basically did what I was told, so to speak, but I've been told by others that it's up to each of us where we get the fiance from. The only thing we don't have any say in is the people who manage our salary packaging.

I like to go offroad, but nothing extreme. I'm already leaning towards a Liberty, and as you say, "an old banger 4WD" if I really keep the 4WD bug. It doesn't matter if the old banger gets dented, but I'd be a little peeved (read "a lot" really) if I dented an Outback.

I just need to have a look at the cost all up so that I can decide which model to buy.

Ahhh so this is organised through work. If you can look externally it might be better option. If oyu were in sydney I would have been able to organise the lease for ya.

Its not a hard process. Fairly simple really. You get a price quote for the vehicle. Then they do the rest. But make sure this is a company you wish to commit urself to for the term of the loan, as if either yourself or the company ends ur employment contract, then it will turn into a normal car loan and there might be conditions where they change how the original lease was set up. Make sure the Km's per year are met, and that you are confident that your car is worth more than the residual value after the term of ur loan.

The only tax benefit from a novated lease is lowering your taxable income. Dont forget aswell nothing on your vehicle can be modified unless it came out that way from the factory on the purchase date.

You still havent answered if car allowance was offered. If so a Commercial Hire Purchase is a way better option with many Tax claim benefits.

Hope that helps guys.
