dealers can definitely do better than that price.....

you have better buying power if you went to the dealerships at the end of the month or end of the quarter....as they want a sale...

good luck!

Especially the end of this month as it's the end of the financial year. That's why all the sales are on as retailers try to boost their figures for the year.

Hey LIBER8ED,
EVERYTHING is negotiable! Especially new cars. A brand new car is essentially a comodity these days. You can get exactly the same thing from the next Subaru dealer down the road or across the border. Make sure your salesman knows that. Especially if you can find one that's in stock that needs to be cleared.

But buying a car can be an emotional experience, and negotiating on price should be completely hard nosed and without emotion. It's a game. It can take days, even weeks for a car. SO if you're not much chop at negotiating then you might consider using a 3rd party to negotiate for you. Or even better, use a 3rd party with fleet purchasing power to negotiate for you.

I almost used http://www.privatefleet.com.au a couple of years ago. Ended up not buying a new Prado like I was thinking (thank God), but was impressed with these guys approach and buying power. I don't have any contacts there and am not affiliated with them in any way, but I'd reckon it could be worth a few thousand dollars in your pocket to give them a go.

There's other alternatives around too such as:
http://www.discountnewcars.com.au
http://www.90days.com.au

These latter two I've seen advertised in Wheels magazine. Can't speak for them.

If you decide to try any or all of these guys out (no harm having them all work for you), let us all know how you go.

Cheers,
Deucer.

thanks for the tips guys.

im just getting the pressure put on me cause im being told that if i dont order now, then i am going to miss the order for this year, and wont get the car till next year.

was going to go in today to negotiate again, however just wasnt sure how much leway i had... had never heard of this new car doesnt exist crap before.

if anything i know the accessories should be certainly negotiable, but even to go on the subaru website, and go thru the "build your own car" option, its coming around the same price.. so there has been no give in what ive been quoted already

i watching a current affair the other night and they were talking about how to bargain the dealers

heres what they said.....along these lines anyway

dealer delivery is bullshit so tell them to take that off straight away
be prepared to walk
offer them something really really low
they're trying to make a sale, not you giving them a sale - make them work for it

then again do u trust a current affair?

otherwise get yourself an asian and get them to do the bargaining for you

That's a pretty standard sales tactic.... trying to pressure you into the deal by exploiting your fears that you'll "miss out". Load of BS. They're not REALLY interested in helping you get your order on time... it's their sales quota and end of financial year bonus they're after. This is business after all!

Besides, there's always another dealer with another car for sale and a quota to fill.

Whatever you do... don't rush it! Get some other prices. (And not other RRP prices from another dealer). In terms of the 'leeway' you're unsure about, with a fleet discount you can expect anything between 3% to 8% discount on RRP. Maybe more if it's a high volume seller or they have an 'extra' motivation to sell.

You're just getting RRP from the sales rep and the website. Don't settle for RRP. As an individual buyer you have very little purchasing power.

If you go into the dealer today, I suggest you play a little game and tell them you're going to contact Private Fleet on Monday to find out the best deal they can get you... then ask the dealer rep if he reckons he can do better then what Private Fleet can do.

Naturally he/she will tell you that he doesn't know what Private Fleet can get you... but if the reps experienced, that's BS. They know FULL WELL what a "FLEET DISCOUNT" is!

So take the reps revised price and contact Private Fleet on Monday to see what they can do for you. You never know, the dealer might get you a better price, but until you check your options you won't be making an informed decision.

And also... don't think you can get away with bluffing a car salesman... it takes one to know one and they're the kings of it. They'll see right through you. So if you try the Private Fleet angle with the dealer... follow-up on it!

Most of all have FUN! :D Car buying is the BOMB!!

i hate car shopping and have the negotiation skills of an infant...

however with the tips you guys have given me, and the numbers of a few good contacts, i am all over it now, taking it for a drive again just to put the icing on the cake for convincing my other half that its an upgrade from the lemon my06 2.5i i have atm, then let her shoot his advances down and tell him we arent prepared to pay that much.

thanks again guys, good to see the vast skill and knowledge you trendsetters have..

cheers

don't be scared, offer them a rediculous price and see what they say - i work in retail, although a different field, oftent they will say meet u halfway or someshit like that...........tints, mats etc should be thrown in, and don't buy the paint protection, rust protection etc stuff either, they are a total ripoff, and often marked up god knows how many hundreds of percent. :)

good luck, just be prepared to walk out if you feel they are taking you for a ride or not giving u a good deal - say see ya later alligator

when my brother got his car, he was offered a certain amount, then when he went to out the deposit down, they tried to charge him a grand and half more - so we went to another dealer, and we got a better deal :)
