It's time for my story of woe....

I got my Liberty under a novated lease with Custom Fleet when I started a new job back in January 2007. In October this year I was made redundant from my previous employer, but fortunately I found a new job quite quickly.

Having been made redundant, I was given a couple of options with my car:
1. Hand it back - at no cost to me.
2. Buy it out for about $44,000.
3. Have my new employer take over the lease.

I was initially attracted to the novated lease because all of my car expenses would be paid from my pre-tax salary. Sure, I pay FBT, but I am still ahead.

Initially it took Custom Fleet over 2 months to actually place the order for my Liberty, and then I knew that they weren't the most efficient people to deal with. Once Subaru had the order, the car came within a week. Actually, it would have been days if I had taken another colour.

So, having been with my new company for about 4 weeks now, the paperwork has gone to Custom Fleet. My new employer they will adjust my tax payments to take into account personal lease payments I have made over the last few weeks. This is good.

But now Custom Fleet have told me that because my new employer only has one lease through Custom Fleet, they won't issue me with a fuel card. So now I am left to pay for all my fuel with post tax money. This wasn't the original deal.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions on where I go from here? I would like to find a way to pay for my fuel pre-tax. Or is there any way I can claim it back at the end of the financial year? Heck, maybe I need to speak to an accountant.

All I know is that it shouldn't be this hard!

just keep all your receipts for fuel and anything mechanical.

You wil be able to claim this all back at the end of the financial year.

custom fleet should be able to give you a fleet card... keep pushing them

Usually it works out most tax efficient to make a post tax contribution (as it helps reduce your fbt liability) if you keep records of all your petrol that could be used as your post tax contribution.

Alternatively keep pushing for a fuel card, worse case you could investigate switching lease companies. I am with iNovation (a broker for Leaseplan) and have everything in the package. Lease plan won't deal with small companies direct, but will work through a broker to give you everything you need.

agreed with the above.. keep pushing for a fuel card and dont give up..

try read over your contract agreement.. im sure there is something in there that could help you

I elected not to have a fuel card with my lease company - I just pay myself and send the receipts monthly to the leasing company and they reimburse directly back to my bank.

This way I paid no account fees and am able to use discount vouchers
