I would say you definitely made the right choice to give it a miss. Also I know a lot of mechanics will miss early stages of headgaskets leaking internally because you can't see it from the outside and you don't get many signs unless you take it for a long hot drive. They don't have time for that.
Best thing to do is drive the car for a while and then look for bubbles in the overflow bottle.
And with any used ej25 just plan to do headgaskets unless they have been done recently by a good subaru specialist.
