steering wheel change?

Postby ptruongy » Fri Sep 23, 2016 12:04 am

I just purchased a 06 tbsti liberty, loving the car so far. I think technically it may be the earlier 05 model. Reason being that my steering wheel doesn't have the remote buttons for stereo etc. Now my question is it possible to swap and install 06 or newer steering wheels and still be able to use all the remote buttons?

That will depend on your head unit, and whether your car has the wiring for the buttons. The buttons themselves can be transferred from one wheel to another (they just unscrew and go in place of the plastic blanking cover).

But from what I understand, only pre-facelift buttons fit on pre-facelift wheels.

This thread has a lot of good info (note the green and white connectors for cruise control and stereo buttons).

So I understand that you can purchase the steering wheel controls separately, but what I don't understand is where would I actually put the controls on the steering wheel? I have looked and compared steering wheels with the controls and my one and it's slightly different.

Oh, yeah you don't have the plastic blanking caps that are removed to install the buttons instead :

If you really care you can fit a post facelift wheel on a pre-face

Get a post face wheel, controls, airbag, clock spring and controls.

Rewire the connector

Dremel these nubs off

If you have an STi airbag, you may need to change the airbag charge - my STi airbag was single stage, so I used my two stage LGT charge. Fortunately these are not part of the recall.

Voila!

Note that the controls are wired to an aftermarket stereo, not stock.

Hardwarebob: thanks for the in-depth run through:)

Although tbh, that's too much work and fiddling around lol. Judging by you're photo, I assume you have a spec b tbsti? Love the sti gear knob and the sti steering wheel. Where did you get them from? And how much were they? I just recently received my facia and am planning on buying a new double din head unit. Can you or anyone else suggest any particular brands or models? Budget is around 1k and I want it to have reverse camera as well with the unit

No, I have a 2005 GT With a loooot of mods. The DAMD wheel is about $700, the STi airbag is about $400, and the Shift knob is about $200. wheel/knob available from garage 88, as well as other places, airbag can be bought second hand, but they are relatively hard to find. I bought it from japan with a steering wheel, then sold the weel. Then you have the Custom leather and the custom dash....
