98 Octane shortages? used 100 Octane...

Postby WhiteGTB » Mon Mar 17, 2008 7:09 am

Not sure about other areas.. but over the weekend I couldn't locate a petrol station that stocked 98 octance. Shortages apparently with the Easter break coming up.

Visited 5 stations in the Sydney Metro area with no luck so @ $1.65 I resorted to 100 Octane. Used it before in the WRX, but this was first time in the Liberty.

I am liking the results so far :) only travelled 100km so far.... still got the remaining tank to go.

Inside the petrol lid it says 98 Octane Only

Does anyone know if there are any bad effects using 100 Octane other then the deeper jab in the hip pocket?

Anyone running 100 Octane full time? Any benefits?

Shell / Coles Express is out of V-Power and it won't be resolved until April. Reason being, Caltex refinery in QLD had a fire and it's out of operation, and then Shell refinery in NSW went down for scheduled maintenance and came back up partially inoperational (V-Power). VIC is due for scheduled maintennace too but we're all crossing our fingers and toes that it doesn't affect anything...!

I can't comment re: 100RON, but they say most cars after 1995 (?) are ok with it.

I assume you are talking about VPower Racing, which is 5% ethanol (and bloody expensive!)

Yeap, that's the one Ric, 5% ethanol. Ethanol.. is it good or bad?

Thanks for the inside info Clarence.... fingers crossed then for 98 Octane.

Whilst 100 Octane will give you more punch you need to be aware it is a hotter burning fuel with less lubricant for your upper cylinder area, running this all the time could affect you valves and seats (burning the outer edge of the valve) making them brittle and prone to cracking.

I have tried the 5% blend 100RON in my 04 GT. My unscientific observations:

It stinks.

The engine didn't seem to run as smoothly, especially on WOT when it seemed pretty rough as the rpm climbed.

No apparent gain in performance, but perhaps needed a few more tankfuls given the 'learning' nature of the ECU.

Given the negatives above, combined with the extra price and Subaru Australia advising not to use ethanol I've got no desire to use it again. Stick to 98RON (Caltex, BP, Mobil) if you can. I don't trust any of the Shell fuels so they are off my radar screen entirely.
