Rear Diff .. :(

Hey guys.. I posted it in here cos i just need a quick kinda answer type thing, and i dont know how often people look in the technical areas (posted on OzLiberty and i dont think anyone looks in technical there either!)

but anyway,

as of about a week ago, my mate noticed a subtle whirring noise coming from the back (similar to sorta off road tyres and such) .. and mentioned that it could be my diff getting low on oil..

it went away for a little while, but last night came back louder..

two of my friends are mechanics, and they both said that it is probably that reason.. diff running low on oil..

apparently subi's go through it fast or something..

anyway, they suggested i go to Subaru or somewhere and get me some Diff oil..

i thought id come on here to double check which one i should go out and get..

They say that Dexcon 3 should be sweet as it is used in most cars and such.. what do you guys reckon?

This isn’t of much help but....
Is you car still under warranty? Do you get it serviced at Subaru? (I can’t remember at what service interval they replace it)

People read the tech section on ozlib and there are heaps of knowledgeable people there but its been quiet lately.

To answer your question, I think Dexcon3 is what Subaru recommends and uses (check the manual). I did a rear diff oil change in a B4 recently and it was pretty much full after 85000kms with no change in both the rear diff and gearbox. I flushed it out and put in some Redline Shockproof Lightweight (smurf's blood) and no complaints so far.

Not sure which gen lib you're talking about but i assume they're all the same so just jack the car up, undo the fill hole and see how much is left.

its a 4gen 2.5i safety..

and my car ran out of warranty 1 month after i bought it off the previous owner

haha..

but yeah, i think ill go that dexcon 3 stuff! thanks guys

Pretty sure Subaru changes it at 50 and 100 thou services.

I had a similar prob, and Subaru had to replace the diff (luckily under warranty). It got loud when I hit 80kmph. All fixed now!!
