I've got a MY05 liberty with the standard 17's on it. I was possibly looking at upgrading my wheels to a bigger size (18's, maybe 19's). I know when you have larger rims you have a lower profile tyre to keep the speedo happy. Just say i get a flat and i have to use to 17 inch spare could there possibly be issues? ie: my friend had a gsr (AWD) many moons ago and had the rear tyres replaced by a tyre shop. But the D*!KH@#DS put different profiles on the rear compared to the front which then stuff up the diff or something (cant remember exactly what). Would it be neccesary to get a spare of the same size, or would a lower profile tyre with the bigger rims be pretty close to the 17's. Hope you get what i mean

the rolling diameter should be the same so should have no issues.

You wouldn't keep it like that anyway cos it looks shite! So for the brief moment it takes ya to get to a tyre place, it shouldn't matter.

And even if cops give you grief, you can easily tell them you're going to the tyre shop .. some are reasonable

Yeah bit unsure on this one.. but it's apparently illigal to have a stock wheel that isnt the same size as ur rims..

Hopefully i'll have no issues (fingers crossed) I've just purchased a set of 18x7 Spec B rims from ozSTi. Can't wait to get them, they look schweeet! He gave me a link for tyre size comparisons (might be somewhere else in this forum also) its very useful http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html.
If i get a flat i dont think ill have the spare on there long enough for a cop to see it. Just couldnt stand the look of different wheels.

You might be right there! I guess if a cop doesn't like you he/she will find any excuse to defect the car. But how about car manufacturers using those crappy little space saver wheels as spares, suppose they are the same diameter but they look like they are more suited for my sons little push bike.

you'll find space savers aren't the same diameter .. if they were, then they would just use normal wheel and tyres! they are actually smaller.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.. you might have the spare on for a day or two max .. and im sure a cop would be understanding if you show them your flat matching wheel in the boot. If not and you get stickered then just complain cos it would be BS.

Im not so much worried about the cops, im more worried about the slight difference in diameter stuffing up something in the AWD system. But then again the spare wont be on there long enough for me to worry about it, unless im stuck out in the middle of no where. my original setup is 215/45/17, on the spec B 18's i will need 215/40/18 to get as close as possible to the original setup. there would be a difference in diameter of these two by 3.9mm. I guess its the same as running one bald tyre and a new tyre.
Its just when i rang up a few different tyre shops for a quote i was getting alot of different opinions, one mob wanted to fit 215/35/18 which would have meant a difference of 17.6mm in diameter between my spare 17 tyre and the 18's which i will have fitted. I guess what im saying is if i were to have had the 215/35/18 fitted cause im no tyre expert and going by there advice, could there be a potential that setup might stuff the awd system if i were to use my spare. Just curious as this was a problem for my mates gsr in the past (my first post) as im no mechanical expert.

I have a MY05 wagon as well and went from the 17" GT wheels to the 18" RB wheels and found that 225/40/18 was the closest to the original size. I went out and bought the cheapest 18" rim for a spare just so I could have the same size tyre as a spare. No point taking a risk as Subaru will use any excuse not to cover anything under warranty. Blown diff $$$$$$$

kneedrager could you possibly post a picture of your rims on the wagon?

MY05WAGON you were absolutely correct about the 225 40 18 tyres being too wide for the RB rims. What a pain in the ass this morning has been trying to come to some sort of a deal with the bloke I bought the tyres from. Got it sorted in the end, car goes in tomorrow to get a set of 215 40 18 put on it. Staying with the Falken FK452's, great tyre.

are they just standard spec b 18 tyres how worn and how much
