Tyre Wear

Hey All,
Knew i needed new Tyres but I hadn't inspected the inside edge until this morning - looks really bad! Must be running a lot of toe in. Is this a common setup for Libertys? regardless time for a wheel alignment too! So in which case I am due for new tyres this week - what is best for wear and ride? I'm not fussed by handling as I never drive it hard enough! i generally do between 25,000 and 30,000km's a year with around 5,000km's of that Towing.

Cheers

Hey Ryan,

Toe in at the front generally helps with straightline stability but it doesn't really help with tyre wear. It is common for a "standard" alignment to run maybe 1-2mm toe in on either side. It is more beneficial to run more negative camber to assist with turn-in, than running toe-in since the former does not cause the tyre to be scrubbed out as much.

For a performance alignment I would have 0 toe on front and rear, -1.0deg camber on each of front sides and -0.4deg camber on each of rear sides. This is the same as recommended by Whiteline.

well, the 050a's are known to be long lasting (I've read of instances - such as Ric - of over 50,000km from a set). Expensive though. There will be other options in lower price brackets but unfortunately I haven't really researched any tires in our 215/45R18 size without performance as the priority. Call the various importers/distributors to get an idea of the tyres in their respective ranges that they would recommend for your priorities.

Of course, for optimum life from a set of tyres, a good wheel alignment is necessary. A alignment mob will ask you of your priorities before setting things final too.

I've just recently had Kumho KU31's fitted and although I've done just under 1,000km, my first impressions are quiet, reasonably grippy and were very well priced ($200 ea for 225/40/18 - compared to around $300 ea for Sumitomo ZIII or 300+ for Toyo Proxes 4)

Can't comment on life of the tyre yet though (obviously)

G'Day Ryan,

I get the impression we are located pretty close to each other (eastern side of Sydney) and if you do get new rubber, I'd really appreciate if you would let me know where you kitted up.

I'm due for at least 1 or 2 hoops, my spare is new so I'm thinking of doing some rotations and should be able to get out of buying a full set.

Cheers (in advance)

Sean

Toe in scrubs the outside edge - toe out scrubs the inside edge
negative camber wears the inside edge (obviously) positive camber the outside edge (obvioulsy also enthusiastic cornering wears the outside edge :))
Negative camber does not enhance turn-in neccessarily - suspension geometry in regards to sway, roll centre and actaully toe out will aid turn-in/ Toe out makes the car more nervous and less stable - hence better turn-in

on second thought probably a camber issue or possibly a combination of both - and i don't think a defensive driving course I did 2 weeks ago has helped on the tyre wear front.

Jax just quoted $270 for A10 Yokohama's

OR

Tempe quoted $190 Kumho KU31 (don't know what they were on about last time for $160?!)

does anyone know anything about these which should I go for??

I have the A10's on my SP23 Mazda (which came on Lancer VRX rims) and I can say they are noisy little buggers! Someone else posted a comment on them being noisy too - EDIT: found it: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=6713&p=98602&hilit=a10#p98602

Personally, I think KU31's "seem" to be a better tyre in the kms I've done so far... Given the driving you do (hwy and towing) I would probably think the KU31s are a better proposition.

A10A's? For a cheap tyre that you don't intend on using in a performance application they're good. Start howling particularly early and let go well before their big brother (V103 aka Sport)
