Alright, after browsing through the forums I have found many people have mentioned bump stops or trimming these bump stops. I've googled it with no solid answers so.. Anyone care to shed some light on these especially when it comes to our libs? What are they? How low can you go before you have to trim? Why do you have to trim them? etc etc.

Yeah, im on stock shocks (non bilsteins) with s-techs.

Both. I don't have a clue what they are.

They're basically rubber blocks which have a compressive (spring) rate which is quite firm, to prevent the shock absorber from hitting rock bottom. They are quite firm.

What are they?
Well - putting it simply, when the suspension "bottoms out" what happens is that the suspension has reached it's limits in being able to absorb the 'shock', or in other words the body of the car or dampers crashes into the suspension components. To prevent damage the either the car or the suspension, manufacturers put bump stops in to soften the impact b/w the two. On the Lib's, they are typically rubber domes (picture the top of bullet) for the rears.



In terms of chopping them, it means to reduce the height, thereby giving more travel for the suspension.

I took a few pics when I had my bump stops trimmed at Shift Performance when we had the 1st dent day. I too had no idea what to look for as I was expecting the same bump stops you see in the front suspension. Little did I know there were the black rubber nipples hanging down from the car. Weird!

But yeah, with my ride height, it's ideal to trim about half the bump stop to give the suspension a bit more travel. A bit more comfortable afterwards!

Here the guy at Shift is about to take a saw to my baby. The work is made a bit easier with the wheel off.


As he pulls away you can see it more clearly now. As described, a black rubber nipple.
