Settling of low springs

Postby olliej » Tue Feb 24, 2009 6:21 pm

I had king springs on my old 04 liberty wagon (see avatar). I have just got the same set put on the new 04 liberty wagon but it doesn't seem right.

The front look pretty much spot on, but the back seems way to high still. Is this due to less weight over the rears and taking more time to settle or have they done something stupid like put the sedan springs on the wagon?

I've personally never put springs only in my car. But normally it does take a few days (If not longer) before it gets down to the proper ride height (That's in a new shocks & springs install).

Just got under the car and checked the model # on the springs and they are right. Guess your right, will settle over time to match what I use to have.

Find a car park with lots of those little speed bumps... In all seriousness it does help... We had to do it in a mates Audi A4, bloody thing looked standard even though it was ment to be like 30mm lower :P

Ollie, did you transfer your old springs over or did you get a new set of Kings? I had a similar issue with my MY05 GT sedan where the fronts sat higher than stock while the rears were perfect. I complained to the shop I got them from and they checked and re-checked the part number. It was the same as indicated in the catalogue and should have lowered the front. I've heard of a few other similar issues with other people as well, and they were pointing fingers at the QA at King Springs at the production line.

IMO Kings suck :)

The front of my car has the typical King issue and sits too high...I complain to King and they say thats the way its meant to be to provide proper clearance...pphhttttt

I'd see if u can return them and go the tein s-techs or eibachs...

Cheers

Problem is Kings are the only ones that are the lowest spring on the market.

My ride is booked in tomorrow morning for a pair of fronts only. If it dosent sit right, i will have the rears done a week later when the fronts settle.

Just looking at the stock set up the fronts sit high thats why im doing fronts only and that should level and/or make the front sit lower.

olliej, how does the thing now ride? Im afraid im in for that bumpy spring cut bouncey ride......) The things we put up with for looks)

Fingers crossed............................

Not really, there are JDM brands you could get as well. However there's a reason why most name brands don't drop the car that low. If you drop it that low without upgrading the other components like dampers, camber adjusters, roll centre adjusters, tie rods, etc. you'll run into a lot of suspension related issues as well as premature wear. There's a point where if you're wanting it that low, you'll need to switch to coilovers.

Just looking at the stock set up the fronts sit high thats why im doing fronts only and that should level and/or make the front sit lower.

That's just the optical appearance. However if you measure the car near the middle, it's actually balanced front and rear. If you change only the fronts, you'll change the dynamics of the car quite a bit.

Have you tried Whiteline? They make a spring called the Flatout that drops the car upto 40mm. I've just bought a set and will have them in next week.

As Arith said going lower than about 40mm, with springs or coilovers, and you'll start to reduce your suspension performance as you'll be adversly affecting your geometry and damper stroke. What you will end up with is a car that ploughs(bad understeer) and is harsh and unresponsive. Even lowering it 40mm you'd want to fit at least an MRT Anti-lift/Caster Kit to improve the geomerty.

Id recommend Tein S-Techs. My car sits flat with no front wheel arch gap. Looks sweet and doesnt bottom out on everything 8)

olliej, given you are in Perth, you are welcome to check out my car in person and see what you think...

Anyone know how much S-techs cost now a days? And what would be the chances of keeping the Kings on the rear and putting the S-Techs on the front?
