Ridiculous Gen 4 Rear Sway Bar

Postby montyLalor » Tue Nov 23, 2021 9:52 pm

Hey Everyone,

Has anyone found and fitted or had custom-made a rear sway bar the runs straight across behind the diff (like almost every other Subaru model) and done away with the sad-sack OEM bar? Every after-market replacement I can find seems to follow this horrible design. I'm sure the drooping down shape under the spare tyre well was designed for a reason, but clearly, fitting aftermarket exhaust systems was not high on FHI's design criteria. I'm finding it very frustrating that my favourite Subaru model is blighted by such a silly-looking and space-robbing rear sway bar. The image below is what I mean:

If anyone knows of a bar that looks like a WRX bar that will suit a facelift Gen 4:

Look for my thread on here for making your own sway bars.

When you have done it and fitted and installed it you will understand why the rear sway bar is shaped the way it is.

The sway bar MUST clear the shape of the rear boot well (Sedan and wagon) and not foul in ALL articulation positions of the rear wheels.

@BillyCorgi Peter, we'll have to agree to disagree here.

I've designed a custom rear bar that will hug the diff the way I believe it should have done as an OEM design. Drive Industries in Somersby NSW will be making it.

Here's a photo of the prototype:

I've asked for quotes for one, two, three, and four bars. I'll post them here, should anyone be interested in a bulk-buy. I need to send them my prototype despite providing a detailed engineering drawing for manufacture  .

*CAVEAT*
I have coil overs. My rear suspension travel is only about 30mm. The bar clears the diff by about 35mm, but will swing pretty freely through an arc of about 70mm (+35mm & -35mm) from it's natural resting location. Those with standard springs and suspension travel purchase at their own risk. I take no responsibility for my design's potential incompatibility with standard suspension's travel.

Pics of said car with 30mm rear travel?

Is it static or bagged, tubbed & tucked or devil camber, daily or static showcar? :swoon:

Here's my daily with BC Racing coilovers inherited from the previous owner:

I've been running the below custom rear bar for about 6 months. It's a Ø20mm solid based on the Ø20mm conduit sample I sent to Drive industries in Somersby NSW.

The original is beside it for comparison.

My conduit and drawing made YouTube:

I've fitted custom lateral guides and custom mounting over-plates to complete the setup. And what a setup. I have not found the grip limit yet. I think only a track day will. And then I doubt my skill level will get there. I will just faithfully tip in and take any corner in all conditions.

Sadly, I see that Drive Industries is "Permanently closed". The ABN is still current, but the FB page and Google ad both have those dreaded words. Their website is gone, too :cray: I wish Doug all the best. He's a top bloke.
