Rear Suspension Creak/Clunk

Hey gang, I have a MY99 (thus early 3Gen) Outback. For a little while it's had a bit of a clunky/creaky noise in the rear left corner, quite resonant through the body cavity which makes tracing difficult..... I initially thought it might have been the jack bouncing around in its holder, because packing it in with some some foam seemed to shut it up for a while, but after a bit the noise resumed.

Chucked the thing on stands and used the jack to cycle the suspension up & down and guess what - clunky creaky noises at fairly specific points through the suspension travel on both compression and rebound. Couldn't feel anything through the pivots, but it's a bit hard to crank the jack with one hand while feeling up the movey bits.....

All the mounting & pivot bolts are tight, none of the links feel loose, and handling feels normal, which really only leaves the Mac strut assembly....

So, any more specific areas the might be known problems to look at a bit more?
