Tyres to fit on gen 5 Liberty

Postby SubLiberty » Tue Oct 22, 2019 7:46 pm

Hi all,

I'm needing new tyres on my Lib. Currently running Michelins which are great on road, however I tend to enjoy going on dirt sometimes and they don't seem to like it, wearing and balding very fast.

So I was wondering if I could fit a 4x4 or SUV tyre on my Lib? Would 225/60R17 fit? Liberty's are 225/50R17 normally. Looking at Pirelli Scorpion ATR or Bridgestone Fueler A/T 697.

Thanks.

Don't think so...see https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ plus the Scorpions will be chunkier/squarer on the sipes (edges) so more likely to scrub..and your speedo will be way out...also I think the Libs are 215 50 17... not 225..so even less likely to fit 225 60 17.. see..https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/. You could do it with adjustable coilovers to lift it but you would need the right offset wheels and maybe rolling of the guards and be aware your braking with that increased circumference would also be affected..

Thanks Stifull, that's a bummer. Didn't think I'd be able to get a 4x4 tyres on it. Gen 5 GT liberty variants and 3.6L (limited and premium) variants have a width of 225.

You should be able to get away with 55 series tyre (e.g. Geolandar). The small circumference increase from 50 to 55 is actually beneficial to your speedo. Out of the factory it reads faster than actual, e.g. on my car (GT with factory 225/45/18 tyres), doing 100 km/h via GPS shows ~108 km/h on the speedo. Between 60-90 speedo is about 5 km/h faster than actual.

Factory 18" wheels are 18x7.5, double check what wheels you have, the size should be stamped on them somewhere.

Have you thought of buying an outback?

Careful with AT tyres as they often come with a lower speed rating than OEM, which can be illegal in some states. I’d suggest a performance oriented SUV tyre might be the go. I recently bought a set of Toyo C100 plus SUV tyres for my Gen 5 outback and they go quite well on the dirt and tarmac. 225/60/17 size.

Don’t ever buy geolandar G95 (OEM on outbacks), they are terrible.
